They support businesses of all sizes across the Midlands, working with clients across sectors including agriculture, service, construction, manufacturing and retail.
They are seeking a Payroll Officer to manage a portfolio of client payrolls using Sage 50c Payroll Bureau and Modulr Salary Payments, ensuring accuracy, compliance with HMRC legislation, pension regulations and company procedures.
The Role
This is a remote working role that would suit someone looking for flexibility and who is confident managing a portfolio of clients independently. The Payroll Officer will be responsible for managing approximately 63 payrolls and 30 annual payrolls, with client sizes ranging from one director-only payroll through to businesses with 360 employees. The Payroll Officer will be expected to work independently, demonstrating excellent attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to identify and resolve payroll issues before work is submitted for review.
Key Responsibilities
- Process weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly, monthly and annual payrolls where required
- Set up new payroll clients and process new starters and leavers
- Calculate salary changes, overtime, bonuses and commission
- Process statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP, SAP and ShPP
- Process salary sacrifice arrangements, pension enrolment, postponement and re-enrolment
- Upload pension contribution files
- Process Attachment of Earnings Orders, student loan deductions, company sick pay and contractual payments
- Prepare and submit HMRC FPS and EPS returns
- Produce payroll reports and process salary payments using Sage Salary Payments (Modulr)
- Maintain accurate payroll records and respond professionally to client payroll queries
- Ensure payrolls are processed within agreed deadlines
- Review payroll calculations, sense-check outputs and investigate unusual results
- Verify information against client instructions and source documentation
- Follow documented payroll procedures and maintain complete audit trails
- Escalate unusual or complex issues promptly
- Record errors and corrective actions where required
- Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll processes
- Support client onboarding where required
Requirements
Essential
- Excellent payroll experience, ideally within a payroll bureau environment
- Experience using Sage 50c Payroll Bureau
- Good knowledge of HMRC payroll legislation
- Experience processing workplace pensions, salary sacrifice arrangements, statutory payments and Attachments of Earnings
- Strong understanding of managing a portfolio of varying payroll clients
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workloads
- Ability to work independently with sound payroll judgement
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Office 365
Desirable
- Experience using Xero Payroll
- Experience using Modulr Salary Payments
- Experience supporting new client onboarding
- CIPP qualification or equivalent payroll qualification
- Experience working towards payroll quality standards, such as CIPP Payroll Assurance Scheme (PAS)
- Experience working within documented quality systems or payroll procedures
