The role sits within a small, dynamic, and impactful team. You will be joining the Talan Strategy and Energy Consulting Business Unit (SEBU), which works across a broad range of energy projects with leading market participants. We help our clients understand what net zero means to them, assess the challenges, and identify solutions. The successful applicant will be interested in low‑carbon technologies, policy and market developments, focusing on decentralised energy with a keenness to drive smart energy infrastructure, energy flexibility and local energy solutions. Our work is designed to strengthen the voice of our clients to influence change at a national level and to ensure that we transition to a low‑carbon economy, protect our environment and minimise the impact of climate change. You will work across a portfolio of clients, including energy service providers, core market functions, trade associations, manufacturers, local authorities and national government across sustainability, heat decarbonisation, energy efficiency and smart tech debates.

Responsibilities

  • Work across a diverse portfolio of government funding programmes, public affairs tasks, research projects and real‑world technical & operational solutions, coordinating inputs from other members of the Business Unit and wider Talan teams.
  • Deliver secretariat services for our energy trade associations, organising meetings, taking minutes and working alongside the subject‑matter experts to deliver on the work programmes.
  • Conduct desk‑based and market research into policy (related to energy, buildings and other environmental issues), commercial business, market processes and other relevant areas of interest.
  • Author reports including policy position or advocacy papers, market research reports, policy insight pieces, project plans, client briefings, blogs and contribute content for other works where necessary.
  • Support the delivery of innovation projects and government funding schemes by providing administrative support, drafting correspondence, document processing and analytics.
  • Support the delivery of and coordinate workshops and events using a variety of tools to gain insight and encourage debate.
  • Visualise data and present findings in an impactful way to engage stakeholders.
  • Integrate and articulate client positions in responses to government consultations, inquiries and calls for evidence.
  • Keep abreast of policy and parliamentary developments and deliver insight to clients and the team.
  • Present briefings and research findings for and with clients at external events and meetings with a variety of organisations.
  • Support the development of research methodologies to support evidence‑based policy recommendations.
  • Attend meetings with government officials, key stakeholders and senior business leaders to communicate client positions and influence the policy landscape.
  • Support business development activities by identifying opportunities for growth through networking and developing good relationships with people in the industry.

Qualifications

  • Experience and qualifications – a relevant degree (2:1 minimum) or equivalent experience in climate change, energy, geography, politics or sustainability; energy operations, research, industry or government experience would be beneficial.
  • Communication – ability to convert complex issues into easily understood analysis, reports and presentations; excellent oral communication skills and confidence presenting at meetings, roundtables and conferences.
  • Organisation and time management – ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines while delivering high‑quality outputs; skilled at developing and implementing work plans.
  • Relationship building – ability to develop successful relationships with clients, policy makers and other stakeholders; a collaborative team player.
  • Passion and dedication – a strong commitment to the low‑carbon transition and to fostering a greener economy.
  • Technical or operational understanding of smart infrastructure, decentralised energy and flexibility is advantageous but not a prerequisite.
  • Upon employment, employees should have a sound awareness of the Company’s Information, Quality, Environmental and Energy Management Systems.

Location London or Birmingham office – Hybrid.
