The Surrey Teaching Centre are looking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher for September 2026. Due to the retirement of a longstanding senior leader at The Surrey Teaching Centre, we have an exciting leadership opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable young people affected by an acquired brain injury.
The Surrey Teaching Centre (STC) is a medical pupil referral unit maintained by Surrey situated in the grounds of The Children’s Trust neurorehabilitation centre in Tadworth Surrey. STC is proud to have been judged ‘Outstanding’ in its last inspection by Ofsted. The vast majority of our learners are following a short stay rehabilitation programme within The Children’s Trust after sustaining an acquired brain injury as a result of an accident or illness. Generally, they have been admitted from an acute hospital setting. Our learners come from all over the UK, and their rehabilitation programmes vary in length from six weeks to four months. Currently we have up to 24 learners aged from 2-19 on roll at STC at any given time.
We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic senior leader who can advocate for children and their families during their placement and transition back to school. This role would suit a special/mainstream/hospital education middle or senior leader with a track record of effective leadership and management as well as experience of Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND). This role will include a part time teaching commitment.
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff support children and young people to re-engage with learning following an acquired brain injury. Prior knowledge of acquired brain injury is not a prerequisite as training will be provided, but knowledge and/or experience of SEND is essential. Education is provided as part of the wider neurorehabilitation offer on site, and most teaching is on a 1:1 basis, enabling the teaching team to deliver personalised learning experiences. As a trauma informed school, we would expect candidates to have knowledge of and/or a willingness to learn about trauma informed practices.
