Location Base: Silvertown, Belvedere, and Rainham
Pay Rate: £200 per shift
Shift Pattern: Standard start time 06:30 AM (Monday to Saturday)
Job Purpose: Responsible for safely loading, transporting, and precisely discharging wet ready-mix concrete and related perishable construction materials from batching plants in Silvertown, Belvedere, and Rainham to customer sites across London, Essex and Kent. Given the time-sensitive nature of ready-mix concrete, this role requires strict time management to ensure materials are delivered and discharged before setting occurs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Driving & Transport Operations: Safely operate an HGV Class 2 rigid truck mixer 8x4 configuration, in heavy urban traffic, active construction zones, and tight residential roads. Adhere strictly to EU/UK Drivers' Hours regulations, Working Time Directive (WTD), and digital tachograph compliance. Plan efficient routes to beat traffic bottlenecks across the East London corridor, prioritising early delivery to maintain slump consistency and product viability.
- Batching Plant & Loading: Report to the assigned batching plant (Silvertown, Belvedere, or Rainham) for a 06:00 AM start. Position the vehicle accurately under the batching plant hopper for loading. Perform visual checks on the concrete mix (slump testing, water ratio monitoring, and visual inspection) before leaving the plant. Manage drum rotation speeds to keep perishable concrete active and prevent premature setting during transit.
- Site Discharge & Customer Interface: Conduct dynamic risk assessments upon arrival at customer sites (commercial developments, highway maintenance, or domestic builds). Manoeuvre the vehicle into precise discharge positions as directed by site agents or pump operators. Assemble, attach, and clean discharge chutes (or position swivel chutes) safely. Operate rear mixer controls to discharge concrete at the required flow rate. Collect customer sign-offs, Proof of Delivery, and log any slump adjustments or delays caused by site readiness.
- Vehicle Hygiene & Maintenance: Washout Procedure (Critical): Perform thorough, mandatory drum washouts immediately after discharging every load to prevent concrete hardening inside the drum, chutes, and hopper. Carry out daily pre-shift vehicle defect checks (tyres, brakes, lights, hydraulic mixer lines) and report any faults promptly. Keep vehicle cab and exterior clean to represent the fleet professionally.
Candidate Requirements:
- Qualifications & Experience: Full UK HGV Class 2 (Category C) licence with no more than 6 penalty points (no DD or DR endorsements). Valid Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and Digital Tachograph Card. Minimum 1 year of HGV Class 2 driving experience in the UK. Previous concrete truck mixer (drum or volumetric) experience strongly preferred; full product-handling and drum safety training provided for experienced Class 2 drivers. CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is advantageous for accessing tier-1 construction sites.
- Skills & Attributes: Strong understanding of ready-mix concrete decay times and perishable material constraints. Good physical condition (job involves attaching heavy chutes, climbing vehicle ladders, and manual washout cleaning). Strong customer service and communication skills when dealing with site managers. Punctuality and dependability for early 06:30 AM starts.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands: Outdoor work in all weather conditions across active construction sites and industrial depots. Hands-on environment requiring regular use of high-pressure water hoses, manual chute manoeuvring, and climbing ladder platforms for drum inspection.
