Environmental Initiatives Manager in Wisbech

Vaughan Ltd is a highly reputable medium-sized Groundworks and RC frame contractor based in Brentwood, Essex. We specialise in Groundworks, RC framework construction, Basements, Temporary works, substructures and all associated works such as underpinning, waterproofing etc.

We are seeking a site-based Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Manager to join our project team. The SHE Manager will be site-based on a large energy from waste (EFW) construction project in Wisbech, Peterborough and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, internal standards and promoting a safe working environment and good culture. The project is in the early stages and the team will consist of approximately 50-70 operatives and subcontractors. The scope of works includes heavy groundworks, bulk and deep excavation, shoring, muckaway, drainage and service ducting installation, concrete chambers, piling attendance, dewatering.

Key risks include excavations, plant movements, confined spaces, lifting operations, COSHH and waste management.

• NEBOSH General/Construction Certificate or equivalent
• Be based near or be able to travel daily to Wisbech, Peterborough
• Previous experience on energy from waste or power station projects - strongly preferred
• CSCS card - preferred
• First aid - desirable
• Fire marshal - desirable

Strong report writing and record keeping skills are required, along with strong computer skills - good with Microsoft packages (Word, Excel), use of databases, systems and apps on digital tablets. Uphold high health and safety standards, legal and procedural compliance and can lead by example.

Responsibilities include:

• Assisting the Directors, SHEQ Manager and Project Manager in all matters relating to health, safety, quality, and environmental management on site.
• Carrying out HSE walk arounds daily to ensure compliance – minimum 50% of time on site every day.
• Carrying out and recording site inspections and audits (minimum once per week).
• Ensuring the completion and regular review of risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), COSHH assessments, manual handling assessments, toolbox talks, procedures and other safety related documentation as necessary.
• Carrying out training, workshops and toolbox talks on site where required.
• Assisting with the development and management of lifting plans, waste management plans, rescue plans, traffic management and site-specific plans and procedures as appropriate.
• Carrying out RPE mask face fit testing and on-site DSE assessments.
• Completing monthly HSE report for submission to client and management team.
• Overseeing high risk and complex works.
• Creating safety alerts and toolbox talks relevant to new industry standards, changing seasons/weather and recording signed returns register.
• Assisting with the creation of, and annual review of organisational policies and procedures.
• Managing site training and competency matrix spreadsheet.
• Supporting the organisation maintain ISO certification using the company management system and controlled forms.
• Managing site sub-contractor PQQ’s and reviewing sub-contractor RAMS for effectiveness and monitoring works.
• Conducting research into industry best practice approaches to help the organisation improve safety performance and efficiency.
• Providing additional general management and support to colleagues on site and across the wider business as required.
• Acting as the company site Mental Health Awareness champion and aiding the wellbeing of colleagues across the site.
• Any other relevant acts and tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Senior Management Team.

Working hours are Monday to Friday: 07:30 - 17:30 on site, with occasional Saturday work, currently forecasted at 2 times per month. This position is available on a day rate or as PAYE on a contract or permanent basis. This project is currently expected to run until April 2027. The company is busy and growing, so there is opportunity to move to other locations and new projects in the future thereafter.
