We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join T. Rowe Price Labs’ AI Engineering team. In this role, you will design, build, and deliver production-grade AI systems and help advance how AI products are developed, hardened, and scaled across the firm. This position is based in our London office, where you will work closely with engineers, product owners, and business stakeholders across the UK and global teams to incubate new AI products, mature them for production, and enable broader adoption through a Build-Operate-Transfer model.

This is a senior hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical problems, building high-quality software, and working with modern AI technologies. You will independently own significant areas of technical delivery, contribute to reusable AI capabilities and engineering best practices, and support other engineers through technical guidance, mentoring, and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deploy, and evolve production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems within modern cloud-native architectures.
  • Own significant components of development across the software lifecycle, working independently to solve complex engineering problems and deliver high-quality technical solutions.
  • Apply deep technical expertise to AI engineering problems and serve as a resource for colleagues, contributing to architecture, design, and implementation decisions.
  • Support the Build-Operate-Transfer model by incubating new AI products, hardening them for production, and working with business-aligned technology teams to transition proven solutions for long-term ownership and scale.
  • Work closely with engineers, product owners, and business stakeholders to translate complex or ambiguous problems into scalable AI solutions that deliver measurable business value.
  • Contribute to reusable AI capabilities and shared platform components across areas such as agent orchestration, tool use, retrieval-based systems, evaluation frameworks, observability, and guardrails.
  • Champion strong engineering practices through software design, code and design reviews, automated testing, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.
  • Build AI systems with measurable quality, production readiness, operational observability, and appropriate safety controls.
  • Be accountable for technical debt within the software and components you own, and actively contribute to improvements in team engineering practices and standards.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment when making tactical and strategic trade-offs across functionality, scalability, maintainability, risk, and delivery.
  • Mentor and support less-experienced engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, design discussions, and day-to-day collaboration.
  • Identify opportunities to apply AI in ways that accelerate workflows, improve decision-making, and create scalable business impact across the firm.

Business Knowledge

  • Work directly with business stakeholders and product owners to understand priorities, shape technical solutions, and align engineering decisions with business outcomes.
  • Apply strong product and engineering judgment to balance innovation, scalability, risk, fiscal responsibility, and long-term maintainability.
  • Translate complex business needs into robust, scalable technical solutions that support both immediate value delivery and broader enterprise adoption.

Qualifications

Required

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive software engineering experience developing applications in languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, with experience independently delivering complex technical solutions.
  • Strong hands-on experience designing and delivering cloud-native solutions using AWS or equivalent, containerized microservices, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Experience building AI-enabled systems, intelligent workflows, or agentic applications in production or near-production environments.
  • Strong familiarity with modern AI engineering patterns such as agent orchestration, tool integration, retrieval-based systems, evaluation approaches, monitoring, and guardrails.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and system design skills, with the ability to take ownership of complex technical problems and work through them with limited assistance.
  • Experience designing practical APIs, abstractions, data models, and service interfaces that support scalable and maintainable software systems.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain complex AI and engineering concepts clearly to engineering, product, and business audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to engineering excellence through automated testing, code and design reviews, observability, and continuous delivery.
  • Ability to make sound tactical and strategic engineering trade-offs and adapt solutions as requirements, constraints, or new information emerge.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced engineers and contribute positively to team engineering practices.
  • Results-oriented engineer with a passion for building high-quality software, learning new technologies, and operating effectively in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Preferred

  • Experience contributing to shared platform capabilities, workflow systems, retrieval-based services, or other reusable engineering components.
  • Understanding of financial markets, asset management, or financial instruments.
