Overview
In this role you lead and deliver highway and development infrastructure projects, ensuring safety, quality, and financial performance. You will work within the highways team while collaborating across disciplines to meet client objectives. You’ll drive design, coordination, and approvals, while mentoring less experienced engineers. This is an opportunity to shape major highway projects and contribute to sustainable transport networks within a global engineering leader.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage designs on mid-large scale highway projects
- Coordinate drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports
- Oversee financial, technical and project management controls for civil works
- Delegate and mentor engineers and technicians
- Ensure compliance with standards (DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, Local Authority guides)
- Design and detail highway and drainage infrastructure
- Coordinate with project teams and external professionals
- Prepare and price scopes, briefs, proposals, and deliverables for new projects
- Develop and maintain client relationships and manage expectations
- Ensure delivery to time, cost, quality and contractual requirements
- Present to clients and stakeholders; attend client meetings
- Conduct site visits and monitor progress against specifications
- Line manage up to 6 direct reports and support their development
- Communicate strategy and updates to the team; enforce people policies
- Foster a high-performing, safe, and collaborative team culture
- Represent the company externally with professionalism
Key requirements
- Substantial experience in the Highways/Development Infrastructure sector
- Chartered status (ICE or CIHT)
- Extensive civil engineering consultancy experience
- Proven lead role in project delivery with dynamic teams
- Strong knowledge of highway design and approval processes
- Experience with standards (DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, Local Authority guides)
- Proficient in highway and drainage design concepts
- Use of Auto-CAD/Civil 3D or similar tools
- Experience in project management and financial/commercial oversight
- Good communication and mentoring abilities
- Ability to collaborate with design teams and stakeholders
- Strong report writing and fee proposal skills
- Ability to manage workload and prioritise competing demands
- Experience of drainage design beneficial
