The primary role of an Engineer (Highways) is to utilize experience to design projects safely and work collaboratively across teams and projects as required. The role will form part of an existing team already delivering a varied programme of highway and transportation schemes for a wide range of public and private sector clients across both the local and strategic highway networks. It will focus on development infrastructure projects from feasibility through to detailed design including highway design and drainage design, associated technical and statutory authority approvals.

Missions / Main Duties

  • Preparation of preliminary through to detailed design for road, drainage and active travel infrastructure.
  • Prepare designs (adoptable or non-adoptable) in compliance with appropriate standards (DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, Local Authority guides, etc).
  • Obtaining statutory approvals.
  • Provide design support to construction phases.
  • Prepare designs on projects under the direction of more senior team members.
  • Preparation of technical outputs, coordinating with other disciplines and represent the team internally and externally.
  • Work with, delegate to, manage, and direct Graduate Engineers and Technicians involved on projects.
  • Execute tasks to quality, time and budget.
  • Record and present information clearly.
  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in the application of a range of methods, techniques and tools.
  • Liaise with relevant project teams to ensure designs are fully co‑ordinated.
  • Liaise with other construction professionals in the development of designs.
  • Assist and prepare with the delivery of technical outputs within the team (Drawings, Specifications, Cost Estimates, Contract Documents, and Technical Reports).

Profile / Skills

  • Strong experience in road, drainage and active travel infrastructure design.
  • Familiarity with DMRB, MCHW, MfS, TSM, local authority guides and other relevant standards.
  • Experience in obtaining statutory approvals.
  • Ability to support construction phases and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Adept at preparing technical outputs: drawings, specifications, cost estimates, contract documents, and technical reports.
  • Good leadership and team management skills, including delegating tasks to graduate engineers and technicians.
  • Strong organisational, time‑management and budget‑control skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency with engineering software and tools.
  • Commitment to SYSTRA’s behavioural framework.
