Overview
In this contract role, you will own the day-to-day reliability and support of a Microsoft SQL Server and BI environment. You will work hands-on to keep databases, data models, and reporting services up, diagnose issues, and ensure high availability for business-critical systems. You’ll troubleshoot across SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS, Power BI, and Fabric, collaborating with IT, Finance, and Data teams. The role offers autonomy in a distributed organization and a clear impact on operational stability and data accessibility. This is a UK-remote, 2-year fixed-term position focused on sustaining and improving the existing BI data platform.
Responsibilities
- Serve as technical SME for SQL and BI environment
- Maximise uptime and performance of critical SQL databases
- Manage escalated user issues, support tickets, and incidents
- Troubleshoot and debug SQL Server, SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, and Power BI problems
- Support queries, stored procedures, functions and views
- Investigate and optimise database performance
- Maintain scheduled jobs and ETL processes
- Support and maintain data models and reporting solutions
- Ensure centralized data from multiple sources is accessible
- Support finance and other critical systems relying on SQL
- Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to resolve system issues
- Maintain technical documentation and support records
- Keep users informed on issue progress and actions
- Provide occasional out-of-hours support for incidents or maintenance
- Work closely with IT, Finance and Data teams to ensure reliable service
Key requirements
- 5+ years with SQL Server / DBA / Data Platform support
- Strong SQL skills: queries, stored procedures, functions, views
- Experience debugging and optimising SQL queries
- Experience with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS
- Strong Power BI knowledge (Desktop and Service)
- Knowledge of DAX, MDX, Power Query / M
- Experience with SQL Server Agent and scheduled jobs
- Understanding of database design and data modelling
- Experience with ETL pipelines and dimensional modelling
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouses, Warehouses, Pipelines, OneLake)
- Experience building/supporting analytics pipelines using Fabric, ADF or SSIS
- Knowledge of Windows Server and networking
