The Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) is a global coalition of leaders across the energy system committed to achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century. Our Commissioners are senior executives from energy, industry, finance, and civil society. Through rigorous, fact-based analysis, we align diverse stakeholders around practical pathways to deliver the energy transition. The ETC Secretariat is hosted by Systemiq.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Head of Strategic Analysis and Insights to lead the ETC’s analytical programme at a critical moment for the energy transition. This role sits at the intersection of:
- You will lead the development of high-impact insights across key areas of the energy transition—including clean electrification, transition economics, and low-carbon molecules—and translate these into compelling narratives that shape decisions by industry, finance, and policymakers.
- This role also requires a strong understanding of how AI is reshaping analytical work—leveraging AI to accelerate insight generation while applying critical judgement to ensure robustness, credibility, and relevance.
Key Responsibilities
- Analytical Leadership
- Lead the ETC’s analytical programme across priority areas, including:
- Energy transition pathways aligned with well below 2°C
- Economics of the transition, including distributional impacts
- Clean electrification and power system transformation
- Hydrogen, bioenergy, and carbon capture
- Define analytical approaches, ensuring rigour and relevance
- Oversee quality assurance across all outputs
- Insight Development & Communication
- Translate complex analysis into clear, compelling insights for senior executives
- Shape flagship outputs including reports, briefings, and workshop materials
- Work with communications teams to extend reach through digital and media channels
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead engagement with ETC Commissioners and external stakeholders
- Facilitate discussions across industry, finance, and policy communities
- Build consensus across diverse and competing perspectives
- Represent the ETC externally as a credible and authoritative voice
- AI-Enabled Analysis
- Embed AI tools into analytical workflows to significantly accelerate research, synthesis, and insight generation
- Identify where AI can replace or augment traditional analytical approaches, improving speed and scale
- Apply critical judgement to validate outputs, challenge assumptions, and ensure analytical robustness
- Build team capability in effective AI use and stay at the forefront of relevant developments
- Lead and develop a small, high-performing analytical team
- Manage multiple workstreams and external research partnerships
- Contribute to fundraising and development of new analytical initiatives
Candidate Profile
- A high-calibre analytical leader with strong energy transition expertise and the ability to connect data, insight, and influence.
- Experience in strategy consulting, energy research, think tanks, or similar high-performance environments
- 5-7+ years of expertise in energy, climate, or related fields – ideally across all energy system aspects
- Strong track record leading analytical workstreams or programmes
- Experience engaging senior stakeholders across industry, finance, or policy
- Practical experience applying AI tools to research, synthesis, and insight generation, with a clear understanding of their strengths and limitations
- Exceptional analytical and problem-structuring skills
- Ability to connect detailed analysis with system-level insight
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to balance detail with system-level thinking
- Experience leading and developing high-performing teams
- Experience across corporate, finance, NGO, and policy contexts
- Familiarity with energy system modelling and scenario analysis (e.g. IEA, BNEF)
- Experience in multi-stakeholder or coalition environments
- International experience across key transition markets
