The Technical Director is responsible for the technical leadership of Team People’s Live Events & Studio service for our client. This role owns the technical vision, standards and delivery across live events and studio productions operations. The Technical Director leads the technical team, ensuring exceptional delivery, technical innovation and operational resilience whilst maintaining world‑class production standards. Working alongside the Operations Manager, the Technical Director is responsible for developing technical capability across the team, leading technical strategy and ensuring all productions are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standard.
While primarily a leadership role, the Technical Director will also maintain advanced operational capability and be able to step into key technical roles during complex productions when required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the technical delivery of all live broadcasts, events and studio productions.
- Act as the senior technical authority across the service.
- Define and maintain technical standards across all production environments.
- Provide technical leadership during high‑profile and complex productions.
- Lead gallery operations across multiple broadcast control rooms.
- Act as Technical Director on complex productions where required.
- Operate Sony vision switching systems to an advanced level during live productions when required.
- Operate Ross Acuity switching system for Auditorium events in our sister building.
- Support vision mixing, camera direction and broadcast delivery across large‑scale live events.
- Lead and operate professional cinema and mirrorless camera systems for studio productions, podcasts, fireside chats and interview‑based content where required.
- Ensure technical readiness across broadcast facilities and studio environments.
- Directly manage Senior Broadcast MSOs and Broadcast MSOs.
- Mentor and develop technical staff.
- Conduct performance reviews alongside the Operations Manager.
- Identify technical training requirements.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
- Own the technical roadmap for the service.
- Lead technical research and development initiatives.
- Evaluate emerging production technologies.
- Recommend improvements to broadcast workflows, automation and production systems.
- Own all technical SOPs and operational documentation.
- Ensure contingency planning is embedded into event delivery.
- Maintain technical compliance and operational standards.
- Lead technical incident investigations and root cause analysis.
- Support Production Management during pre‑production planning.
- Develop technical solutions for complex live events and studio productions.
- Review technical risks and mitigation plans.
- Ensure productions are appropriately resourced from a technical perspective.
- Work closely with the Operations Manager to align technical resources with operational priorities.
- Support workforce planning through technical capability assessments.
- Escalate technical and operational risks where appropriate.
- Act as the senior technical contact for complex client engagements.
- Provide technical consultation during planning meetings.
- Build confidence with stakeholders through expert technical leadership.
- Lead automation initiatives and workflow improvements.
- Drive technical innovation across the service.
- Develop technical capability across the department.
- Champion best practice in broadcast and studio production.
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong understanding of broadcast gallery workflows and control room operations.
- Experience with EVS, graphics workflows and live streaming technologies.
- Excellent leadership, mentoring and people development skills.
- Strong understanding of professional audio, vision, lighting and presentation systems.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- A passion for continuous improvement, innovation and developing technical excellence.
Education & Experience
- Minimum 7 years of professional live event and broadcast production experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience operating as a Technical Director or senior broadcast technical lead.
- Advanced operational knowledge of Sony broadcast vision switchers and Ross Acuity.
- Strong proficiency in operating a range of installed AV equipment, including Ross Carbonite, Barco switching, Sony RCP 1500 and ETC Ion lighting desk.
- Experience operating professional cinema and mirrorless camera systems within studio production environments.
- Demonstrable experience delivering multi‑camera studio productions, podcasts, fireside chats, interviews and live broadcast productions.
