The Yacht Technical Manager is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient technical operation of a portfolio of high-value yachts. This role requires a highly experienced maritime professional with strong technical expertise, commercial awareness, and a client-focused mindset, supporting owners, captains, and crew to ensure optimal yacht performance and ownership experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Management & Fleet Oversight
- Oversee the technical operation and performance of an assigned fleet of yachts
- Ensure all vessels comply with Flag State, Class, and international maritime regulations (ISM/ISPS)
- Monitor and manage Planned Maintenance Systems (PMS) across the fleet
- Provide technical guidance and support to Captains and Chief Engineers
- Identify and mitigate technical risks, ensuring proactive issue resolution
- Refit, Dry Dock & New Build Projects
- Plan, manage, and oversee refits, dry docks, and major repair works
- Coordinate with shipyards, contractors, and surveyors to deliver projects on time and within budget
- Act as Owner’s Representative during new build and commissioning phases
- Attend sea trials, inspections, and final delivery processes
- Budgeting & Cost Control
- Prepare and manage annual technical budgets for each vessel
- Review and approve quotations, invoices, and purchase orders
- Ensure cost-effective procurement while maintaining high-quality standards
- Monitor warranty claims and cost recovery processes
- Client & Stakeholder Management
- Act as a primary technical point of contact for yacht owners and representatives
- Maintain strong relationships with Captains, crew, shipyards, and suppliers
- Deliver clear, concise technical reporting to clients and senior management
- Uphold high service standards and client experience expectations
- Compliance, Safety & Reporting
- Ensure full compliance with safety management systems and certification requirements
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory surveys
- Prepare technical reports, risk assessments, and fleet performance summaries
- Promote a strong safety culture across all managed vessels
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience as Chief Engineer or senior engineering role onboard yachts or commercial vessels
- Proven shore-based experience in yacht or maritime technical management
- Strong knowledge of yacht systems, refits, and maintenance planning
- In-depth understanding of maritime regulations (ISM, ISPS, Class & Flag)
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities
Desirable
- Chief Engineer (STCW III/2) or Marine Engineering degree
- Experience managing superyachts (40m+)
- Experience with new build or major refit projects
- Familiarity with yacht management software and PMS systems
