The purpose of this post is to support the service primarily through contributing to the translational projects undertaken in Synnovis Genomics. The post holder will support the development of new tests and the implementation of new laboratory equipment supporting the diagnosis and management of rare diseases and cancer. They will be involved in experimental design as well as execution and write up of results. They will ensure that the laboratory tests and reports are completed to a high standard and will work closely with clinical and scientific teams. They will have a wide knowledge of clinical molecular genetics.

The post holder will work closely with Associate Practitioners, Genetic Technologists and Clinical Scientists.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for the timely delivery of translational projects and will rotate through areas of the Multi-omic Medicine Service to gain competence. They will manage multiple tasks, maintain and operate complex analytical equipment, verify results, and ensure routine service delivery is prioritised. They will train staff on equipment, participate in evaluation, validation, and implementation of new tests, and apply technical, scientific, and clinical knowledge, including troubleshooting existing and developing assays. The role includes safe handling of samples, replenishing supplies, maintaining equipment and databases, providing feedback to colleagues, participating in audits, updating practices and documentation, engaging in research and development, and adhering to ISO:15189 standards and the quality management system.

Job responsibilities
The post holder is expected to:
- To be responsible for the timely delivery of translational projects
- Rotate through and become competent in discrete areas of the Multi-omic Medicine Service as required; participate in other appropriate rotations as required.
- To be personally responsible for the time management of multiple tasks as described in the job description and to respond to the changing requirements of laboratory by accommodating additional tasks and responsibilities as required
- Maintain and routinely operate the complex analytical equipment used within the Multi-omic Medicine Service to ensure its accurate function; verify the results obtained in preparation for issue to service users
- The post holder will be required to have an awareness of service delivery being undertaken in the lab ensuring routine service delivery is prioritised and when needed, supported by the post holder
- The post holder will be responsible for the training of staff on specified equipment held by the laboratory, and will participate in evaluation, validation, and implementation of new tests and equipment.
- To demonstrate and apply a thorough understanding of the technical, scientific and clinical principles involved in the delivery of the genetics service for which the job-holder has responsibility. This will include trouble-shooting of assays and techniques both existing and in development
- Safely collect, receive, record and dispose of samples intended for the Multi-omic Medicine Service
- Replenish supplies and resources used in analysis and for maintaining equipment and databases in the Multi-omic Medicine Service
- Continually feedback information on all the above to peers and senior colleagues
- Participate in regular review and audit of the operational aspects of the Multi-omic Medicine Service, updating practices, policies and their documentation; regularly participate in learning activities including research and development
- Adhere to ISO:15189 standards and actively participate in the quality management system

Person Specification
Qualifications
- 1st or 2nd class honours degree in genetics or biological science
Experience
- Extensive practical experience in a clinical laboratory (delivering clinical molecular genetic services), including NGS
- Supervisory and/ or managerial experience
- Experienced user of laboratory information management systems
- Experienced in the use of data analysis software and/or variant interpretation programmes
- Experience of molecular diagnostic test development
Skills & Knowledge
- Demonstrates organizational and team-working skills
- Ability to work unsupervised when required
- Knowledge of a range of routine healthcare sciences duties, obtained through a period of training to degree level or equivalent
- Numerate and literate with good command of spoken and written English
- Clear verbal and written skills in communication.
