We are currently recruiting for Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our fast paced and dynamic Microbiology team. This role is part of a team which provides an efficient and effective Microbiology service to two general hospitals (Southend University/Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital Trusts) and local GP community. We\’re the first lab in the UK to be able to offer some Specialist BMS staff the opportunity to read bacterial cultures from home, utilising BD Kiestra Synapsys technology. The postholder will be expected to be able to rotate through all areas of Microbiology as required, and to perform all designated duties in accordance with local working practices. You will need to perform and interpret routine and specialist biomedical investigations autonomously and to provide patients results within agreed quality standards of service delivery and turnaround times under the supervision of senior staff. You will need to provide professional leadership to Trainee BMS, Associate Practitioner, Laboratory technicians and MLAs in Bacteriology, Molecular biology, and Serology and provide technical advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescales. You will receive regular training and coaching to develop your skills and to support you in your working life. Role specific – Automation Laboratory – Kiestra TLA, MRSA and Urogenital Sections Role specific – Automation Laboratory – Automated ID, AST, reading room and wound swab sections To be experienced in set-up, use and advanced trouble-shooting of automated systems for ID and AST (Maldi-Tof and BD Phoenix) To act as key contact and laboratory link for Infection Control Role specific – Manual Bacteriology – CL3, Mycology and Waste Management To be experienced in set-up, use and advanced trouble-shooting of liquid TB culture platform (BD MGIT) To act as Health and Safety Lead for the department, ensuring COSHH and risk assessments are performed and maintained. Providing reports to Quality Lead for inclusion in Quarterly Management Report Role specific – Manual Bacteriology – Blood culture, Sterile body fluid, Faeces, Environmental sections To be experienced in set-up, use and advanced trouble-shooting of blood culture platform (BD FX) in ESLs and Hub To oversee training and competency assessment of staff loading / unloading BD FX at ESLs To work in conjunction with Team Manager for CL3 and Mycology and waste management, providing cover as required HCPC registered, have at least 2 years post registration experience and have a Specialist portfolio or equivalent in Microbiology. Able to demonstrate a good knowledge and experience of industry standard laboratory information management systems and computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Statistical Packages. Working knowledge of Microbiological manual and automated techniques and practices. Working knowledge of serology and Molecular biology techniques and platforms.
