Role Overview
As the Advanced Practitioner in Blood Transfusion, you will lead excellence, governance and continuous improvement across our Essential Service Laboratories at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital. You will apply expertise in transfusion theory and practice to provide strategic and operational leadership, ensuring full compliance with regulatory standards, including MHRA and ISO15189.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert leadership for the technical advancement of the Blood Transfusion service in conjunction with the clinical lead of Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
- Lead and support Team Managers, Biomedical Scientists and Pathology Support staff across Blood Sciences (Haematology, Clinical Chemistry and Blood Transfusion) within both Essential Service Laboratories.
- Ensure high-quality analysis, service standards and achievement of key performance indicators.
- Provide expert technical and operational leadership to the laboratory service.
- Oversee specialist training for Biomedical Scientists and other professionals, offering expert advice.
- Develop and manage policies, risk management, quality management procedures and monitoring within the Blood Transfusion department.
Required Qualifications
- HCPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist with evidence of continued professional development.
- MSc (or equivalent) in Blood Transfusion and a Specialist Diploma in Blood Transfusion (or equivalent).
- IBMS Fellowship (Blood Sciences, Haematology or Transfusion Science) or equivalent experience.
- IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma if applicable, or an additional Masters level qualification.
- Management qualification to ILM level 3 or relevant experience.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory information systems and basic software applications.
- Ability to work independently, implementing and proposing procedural changes.

- Demonstrable broad-based experience as a specialist Biomedical Scientist.
- Excellent problem‑solving, numeracy and interpretive skills.
- Leadership qualities including coaching, coordinating and supervising a team.
- Special interest and expertise in Quality, Health & Safety, Training or IT.
