We are seeking an experienced Lead Systems Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping, integrating, and delivering a complex, safety and performance critical system. Working at the heart of a multidisciplinary team, you will help define the technical direction across the full system lifecycle while ensuring robust integration across multiple sub-systems and suppliers.

About the role

You will work closely with the Project Chief Engineer to identify, analyse, and resolve technical issues across the system and its sub-systems, ensuring the integrity and coherence of the overall solution. In addition, you will deputise for the Project Chief Engineer when required, providing technical leadership and decision-making authority across the project.

You will lead the architecture function across the programme, ensuring the system architecture is developed, maintained, and documented throughout the lifecycle. A key part of your role will be driving effective system integration, supplier engagement, and technical governance.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Project Chief Engineer to identify and resolve technical issues across system and sub-system levels.
  • Lead the system architecture team and ensure architecture artefacts are developed and maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead end-to-end integration of sub-systems, ensuring alignment with system requirements and design intent.
  • Engage and manage technical relationships with suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Influence requirements at all levels to enable informed design decisions and technical trade-offs.
  • Provide leadership in identifying, assessing, and managing technical risks and opportunities.
  • Support test planning, verification, and validation activities to support certification and delivery.
  • Collaborate with and influence key stakeholders, including customers and end users.
  • Guide sub-system design teams through technical reviews and assurance processes.
  • Travel within the UK and internationally to engage with customers and partners.

Key skills

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in a STEM subject with strong numerical, analytical, and design capability.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle delivery of complex systems and sub-systems.
  • Experience of technical baselines, change control, and systems/project lifecycle management.
  • Solid background in systems architecture and integration within complex engineering programmes.
  • Proven ability to integrate supplier sub-systems into larger system demonstrations.
  • Demonstrable experience influencing system design at a senior technical level.
  • Experience leading or contributing to successful design reviews and resolving complex supplier or integration issues.
  • Knowledge of military EW, radar, or passive/active RF systems.
