We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Maintenance Engineer with proven welding and fabrication experience to join a busy recycling and manufacturing site in the Middlesbrough area. This is a mechanically focused position, ideal for someone who enjoys practical, hands-on engineering. Majority of the role involves welding and fabrication work, with the remaining focused on mechanical maintenance and fault-finding across a range of plant and machinery.
You will be responsible for ensuring all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and reliably through a mix of planned and reactive maintenance.
Key Responsibilities- Perform mechanical maintenance, servicing, and repair of plant and mobile machinery.
- Carry out MIG and arc welding to repair and fabricate machine guards, chutes, and structural supports.
- Use plasma cutters, grinders, and oxy-fuel tools for fabrication work.
- Maintain and repair conveyors, shredders, hydraulics, pneumatics, and screening systems.
- Diagnose mechanical faults, replace bearings and shafts, and support machine overhauls and installations.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and to a high standard.
- Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.
- Must have strong welding and fabrication experience (MIG / Arc essential).
- Mechanical or Industrial Engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
- Experience within heavy industry, recycling, or manufacturing environments.
- Good knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and mechanical systems.
- Basic electrical understanding would be an advantage.
- Reliable, proactive, and safety-focused engineer.
- 4 on 4 off day shift pattern (rare in manufacturing).
