If you’ve spent your career in scheme implementation, and you’ve ever found yourself thinking “I enjoy the delivery side of this, but I’d like to be closer to shaping how it’s done”… this one might be worth a look.

I’m working on a Head of Onboarding role within a pensions administration function at a leading provider.

This isn’t a “sit above it and report on it” kind of role. It’s a “make sure it actually happens” kind of role.

You’d be leading the end-to-end onboarding of new pension scheme clients, taking responsibility for delivery across some increasingly complex transitions. It’s a growing pipeline and a space that’s becoming more technical, more varied, and more strategically important.

What makes this interesting is the structure. It’s a relatively flat environment, with separate teams covering administration, data, and client relationships but this role sits right at the centre of it, pulling everything together. You’re not managing every moving part directly, but you are accountable for making sure they move in the same direction.

That means influence is everything. Coordinating across teams, challenging where needed, unblocking issues, and keeping delivery on track. You’d also act as the main client contact during onboarding, so there’s a strong external-facing element too.

They’re looking for someone with a solid pensions background, whether from administration or risk transfer who has already stepped into implementation or onboarding and understands what “good delivery” actually looks like in practice. You don’t need to be a deep technical data specialist, but you do need to be data-aware and comfortable overseeing complex moving parts.

There’s one direct report to start with, but this is a function that’s expected to grow as the pipeline continues to build.

If you’ve come from a third-party administrator environment and are wondering what it looks like to move into a provider setting where you’re closer to the product, the proposition, and the direction of travel, this is exactly that kind of shift.

It’s hands-on, visible, and genuinely central to how the business delivers for its clients. If it resonates, or you know someone it might suit, please apply/share accordingly!

How to prepare for a job interview at Synchronicity Group

Know Your Pensions Inside Out

Make sure you brush up on your pensions knowledge before the interview. Understand the nuances of scheme implementation and be ready to discuss what 'good delivery' looks like in practice. This will show that you're not just familiar with the basics, but that you can also contribute to shaping how things are done.

Demonstrate Your Coordination Skills

Since this role is all about pulling different teams together, think of examples from your past where you've successfully coordinated across departments. Be prepared to share specific instances where you’ve unblocked issues or influenced others to keep projects on track. This will highlight your ability to lead without direct authority.

Showcase Your Client-Facing Experience

As the main client contact during onboarding, it’s crucial to demonstrate your experience in managing client relationships. Prepare to discuss how you've handled client expectations, communicated effectively, and ensured satisfaction during complex transitions. This will underline your suitability for the external-facing aspect of the role.

Be Ready for Technical Discussions

While you don’t need to be a data specialist, being data-aware is essential. Familiarise yourself with the technical aspects of pensions administration and be ready to discuss how you’ve overseen complex moving parts in previous roles. This will show that you’re comfortable navigating the technical landscape, even if it’s not your primary focus.
