General Summary: Assists in providing required student academic, physical and behaviour support services while ensuring a high degree of confidentiality. Duties may be assigned by building Principal, Director of Special Education, and/or Superintendent and will vary according to the age, grade and needs of students.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide student academic, emotional and physical support services
  • Assist in implementation and documentation of behaviour intervention plans
  • Provide individual and small group instruction which has been planned by classroom teacher, special education teacher, or other student services coordinator
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to recognise student strengths
  • Assist students in music, art, media, and/or physical education
  • Supervise and assist students in lunchroom and on playground
  • Assist students to and from the school bus
  • Assist students with toileting needs as appropriate which may include diaper changing and catheterisation
  • Assist students with medical needs per medical plan
  • Assist students with orthopedic devices
  • Collect and maintain data related to student’s goals, objectives, medical or emotional needs
  • Additional duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of student academic and emotional needs
  • Experienced working with students with disabilities
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills in working with students, school community and staff
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality
  • Maintains a high level of personal and professional flexibility
  • Associates Degree or 60 college credits required for At-Risk Para; preferred for Classroom and Special Education Para (high school diploma or GED required)
  • Eligible to apply for a paraprofessional to teacher grant through the Washtenaw Intermediate School District that would significantly lower the cost of tuition.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk or stand, as well as crawling, stooping, and crouching. The employee may be required to offer physical assistance including toileting, support during adaptive physical education activities. The employee may also be required to restrain a child. Must be able to communicate with others and clearly understand normal conversations in person and on the telephone. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
