About the role
We are currently seeking a Laboratory Assistant to play a pivotal role in supporting our scientists, ensuring they have the resources they need to carry out scientific research. Reporting to the electrophysiology team leader, this role will be responsible for a variety of tasks, ensuring that the laboratories in Glasgow run smoothly. This is a part‑time zero‑hour contract, consisting of around 20 hours per week and would be perfect for a part‑time university student studying a biological subject or a recent graduate. We are looking for someone to join the team as soon as possible on a 3‑4‑month temporary contract.
Role Responsibilities
- General lab equipment maintenance and coordinating engineers for repairs and servicing of equipment in conjunction with scientists.
- Register and record Fixed Asset Numbers on new equipment purchases and record them on the corresponding system.
- Assist the Operations Manager with health and safety responsibilities.
- Assist with management of all elements of equipment breakdown, repair, replacement and servicing.
- Assist with ensuring all required regulatory licences and permits remain up to date.
- Assist with decontamination of equipment.
- Stock checking of general consumable stores and re‑ordering.
- Assist in the preparation of reagents/buffers.
- Proactively seek to support others within the team.
- Use relevant systems to identify tasks and track their resolution.
- Maintain a tidy workplace in addition to a high level of H&S awareness.
- Liaise with the team to ensure core working hours and tasks are covered.
Skills & Qualifications
- Five National 5s or equivalent at grade C or above including English Language and Maths.
- Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment desirable, but full training will be given.
- Attention to detail – works quickly, but accurately.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Able to work well within a team, as well as independently.
- A good working knowledge of mathematics and IT – confident in the use of a variety of IT systems.
- Able to work to deadlines in a safe and efficient manner, prioritising tasks as necessary.
