About the role

We are currently seeking a Laboratory Assistant to play a pivotal role in supporting our scientists, ensuring they have the resources they need to carry out scientific research. Reporting to the electrophysiology team leader, this role will be responsible for a variety of tasks, ensuring that the laboratories in Glasgow run smoothly. This is a part-time zero-hour contract, consisting of around 20 hours per week and would be perfect for a part-time university student studying a biological subject or a recent graduate. We are looking for someone to join the team as soon as possible on a 3-4-month temporary contract.

Role Responsibilities

  • General lab equipment maintenance and coordinating engineers for repairs and servicing of equipment in conjunction with scientists.
  • Registering and recording Fixed Asset Numbers on new equipment purchases and recording them on the corresponding system.
  • Assisting the Operations Manager with health and safety responsibilities.
  • Assisting with management of all elements of equipment breakdown, repair, replacing and servicing.
  • Assisting with ensuring all required regulatory licences and permits remain up to date.
  • Assisting with decontamination of equipment.
  • Stock checking of general consumable stores and re-ordering.
  • Assisting in the preparation of reagent/buffers.
  • Proactively seeking to support others within the team.
  • Using relevant systems to identify tasks and track their resolution.
  • Maintaining a tidy workplace in addition to a high level of H&S awareness.
  • Liaising with the team to ensure core working hours and tasks are covered.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Five National 5s or equivalent at grade C or above including English Language and Maths.
  • Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment desirable, but full training will be given.
  • Attention to detail – works quickly, but accurately.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work well within a team, as well as independently.
  • A good working knowledge of mathematics and IT – confident in the use of a variety of IT systems.
  • Able to work to deadlines in a safe and efficient manner, prioritising tasks as necessary.
