An exciting opportunity to join a technology scale-up focused on eliminating fuel poverty and improving living standards in Social Housing as a QA Engineer.

Our mission

At Switchee, we believe that everyone deserves to live in a decent home and that the environments we inhabit have a massive influence on our ability to enjoy life and prosper. One in five households in the UK live in social housing, a sector with the right values at its core but that has historically struggled to deploy innovations in the home. Many residents still can’t afford to heat their homes, and live in cold, mouldy properties they can’t be proud of.

We believe that radical innovation in internet-connected technology can ensure that every resident, every day, is living in a home that allows them to succeed. That’s why our products are built not just on great technology, but on an understanding of what people want from the space they live in. This approach led us to reimagine the most mundane household object: the thermostat, into a product that automatically reduces energy bills, looks great, and offers control to those who want it. We are also revolutionising the way social landlords manage their housing stock with an obsessively tailored SaaS property dashboard and handy alerts on things like when the boiler is going to break. Our goal is to perfect the ultimate connected hub for the social home. It’s going to revolutionise the way residents interact with their homes and landlords manage their properties.

The Role

Switchee is looking for a QA Engineer to join our dynamic, highly skilled Engineering team to deliver a product our customers love. You will have a strong background in QA, with a solid understanding of testing principles and methodologies, and deep knowledge of test planning, scripting and execution.

You will be keen to take QA responsibility for a broad area and make it your own. You will be performing a combination of Manual and Automation Testing, with the majority of your time spent testing across Cloud (our web apps and associated services) and Devices (Firmware testing for an IoT smart thermostat). You may also be asked to support the testing of releases for our Client API and Mobile Application.

You’ll be able to act independently and autonomously, prioritising your work across different streams based on demands at that time.

Your Responsibilities

  • Cloud testing – feature testing of newly developed products and features in a sprint, along with maintaining and extending our existing automated regression test suite
  • Devices testing – feature and regression testing of our device (IoT smart thermostat) firmware releases, and helping build out our automated test suite (as capacity allows) over time
  • Write clear, coherent test cases, using 3 amigo sessions (or similar) to gather requirements and ensure we’re testing the right things in the most efficient way
  • Own Switchee’s test backlogs across Cloud and Devices, effectively managing the priority of tests to be executed and test cases to be automated
  • API testing – building out automated test coverage of our RESTful Client API
  • Mobile App testing – feature & regression testing of occasional mobile app releases across Android and iOS
  • Collaborate with the external contractor QA resource on specific projects (e.g. automating API testing) and as an additional resource when required

You will work closely with the Engineering and Product teams to support upcoming releases, planning and executing test rounds. You will use your excellent communication skills to engage with others across the team, keeping everyone updated on status and any resource contention that requires discussion.

Who You Are

These are ideal but not required – we will happily consider applicants who we believe can successfully grow into the role, even if they are not 100% qualified. We promote a diverse, inclusive and empowering culture at Switchee:

  • Experience using a ticket management tool (e.g. Jira)
  • Experience writing, updating and executing manual test cases using a test management tool (e.g. Xray)
  • Some experience with Javascript or TypeScript, alongside an automation test framework (e.g. Playwright or similar) for web browser testing
  • Basic SQL skills to query databases for testing outside the UI and generating test data etc.
  • ISTQB Foundation level certification or similar
  • Collaborative individual who works well in a team, proactive in reaching out to others when needed, demonstrating excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organisation skills, able to effectively manage competing priorities across different workstreams

Any of the following would be a plus:

  • Experience with the Pytest framework (used for our automated device testing)
  • Experience with Git or a similar version control system (used for managing our automated test cases)
  • Experience with a CI/CD tool (e.g. GitHub Actions or similar)
  • Experience in testing and debugging physical IoT devices
  • Experience testing RESTful public API’s (e.g. using Postman or similar)
  • Experience testing Mobile Apps (iOS & Android)

Perks

  • Unlimited holiday policy + Bank Holidays! No need to count those Winter break days anymore!
  • Everyone at Switchee enjoys flexible working hours and is the master of their own routine.
  • We have a remote-first Hybrid Working Model, with offices near London Bridge.
  • We will provide you with all the necessary equipment to work from home in a safe and enjoyable manner.
  • We host Quarterly offsites as an integral component of our Hybrid Working arrangements. These offsites are mandatory for all team members and serve as a vital opportunity to foster cohesion and collaboration within our diverse workforce.
  • We socialise together with regular outings in London and Birmingham.
  • We provide an L&D budget and access to our Switchee Library, where you can request new books monthly.
  • We provide access to ThanksBen – a platform with plentiful discounts and free virtual well-being sessions.
  • We offer Spill, a Mental Health app at your fingertips, where you can get in touch with a therapist in record time.
