About the Role

As an Engineering & Construction Underwriter based in London, you'll be responsible for underwriting a portfolio of UK construction risks, partnering with brokers, clients, risk engineers, and claims specialists to deliver effective insurance solutions. You will build on your existing construction underwriting experience while gaining exposure to major projects across the UK construction sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and underwrite Construction All Risks (CAR), Erection All Risks (EAR), Delay in Start-Up (DSU) and other related construction covers.
  • Analyse construction project information, including contractors, construction methods, technologies, schedules and risk controls.
  • Negotiate policy terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers and clients.
  • Monitor project performance throughout the construction lifecycle and support risk management initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Risk Engineering and Claims colleagues to investigate losses and develop practical solutions.
  • Manage policy amendments and coverage changes as projects evolve.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with relevant stakeholders including brokers, contractors, project owners, etc.
  • Continue developing technical underwriting expertise through Swiss Re's structured training and development programmes.

About the Team

Our London Engineering & Construction team underwrites a broad portfolio of construction business across the UK and internationally. The team reviews projects ranging from:

  • Residential, mixed-use and commercial developments.
  • Data centres.
  • Industrial, manufacturing and warehouse facilities.
  • Transport infrastructure.
  • Power and utility projects.
  • Mining.
  • Oil, gas and petrochemical projects.
  • Renewable energy construction, including solar, wind, and battery storage projects.

You'll join an experienced and collaborative team of underwriters committed to technical excellence, continuous learning, and providing innovative solutions to clients operating in an increasingly complex construction environment.

About You

You have experience within construction insurance and are looking to develop your career within a highly respected and technically focused underwriting team. You enjoy interpreting project information, analysing risks, and building trusted relationships with brokers and clients. You are commercially minded, detail-oriented, and motivated to continuously expand your knowledge of the UK construction sector.

We're looking for candidates with:

  • Experience within construction / engineering underwriting, property underwriting, broker placement, or technical insurance support roles.
  • Exposure to Construction All Risks (CAR), Engineering All Risks (EAR), Property, or Specialty Lines of business.
  • Strong analytical skills and sound underwriting judgement.
  • Good understanding of UK construction projects and associated risk exposures.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, presentation and relationship-management skills.
  • Strong IT skills.

We'd particularly welcome candidates with:

  • Knowledge of major contractor and developer-led projects.
  • London Market experience.
  • Experience working with multinational clients and programmes.
  • Progress towards or completion of ACII or other professional insurance qualifications.

Our company has a hybrid work model where the expectation is that you will be in the office at least three days per week.

For London the annual base salary range for this position is between GBP 63,000 and GBP 95,000 (for a full-time role). The specific salary offered considers the requirements, scope, complexity and responsibilities of the role, the applicant's own profile including education/qualifications, expertise, specialisation, skills and experience. In addition to your base salary, Swiss Re offers an attractive performance-based variable compensation component, designed to recognise your achievements. Further you will enjoy a variety of global and location specific benefits. Eligibility may vary depending on the terms of Swiss Re policies and your employment contract.
