Job Description:
At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services, better processes, and a better quality of life for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.
We have an exciting and unique opportunity to join our Young Person’s Substance Misuse Service as a Substance Misuse Worker. We offer both permanent and fixed-term contracts until April 2025.
UTurn provides support to children, young people, and their families to reduce harm, improve resilience, and promote independent lives away from substance misuse. The service is for children up to 18, and care-experienced young people up to 21, with substance misuse issues. It also supports those aged 18 during their transition to adult services.
The aim is to help young people overcome substance misuse problems, including alcohol, and promote healthy lifestyles through motivational, psychological, and culturally accessible interventions. The service works closely with treatment providers, YJS, children’s services, Education, CAMHS, and SBC public health. This is an exciting time to join as the public health team aims to meet government outcomes and improve the treatment system.
You will conduct assessments and interventions, especially for young people with complex needs, and support healthier lifestyle choices. You will provide advice, harm reduction, relapse prevention, and referrals. Your caseload will involve multi-agency work alongside social workers, YJS workers, CAMHS, and attendance at relevant meetings. You will also lead group interventions such as school assemblies or community groups. Flexibility is required as some work may be outside office hours, including outreach and community activities.
To succeed, you need a specialist qualification (minimum Level 4) in a related field, such as Diploma in Substance Misuse, Youth Justice, Youth Work, or Mental Health. You should have knowledge of relevant legislation and policies, resilience, risk management skills, good time management, and excellent communication skills.
We are looking for someone who:
- Can deliver drug awareness and harm reduction training
- Is confident presenting in schools and community settings
- Can work early evenings (after 5 pm)
- Maintains confidentiality and follows safeguarding procedures
- Can deliver community resolution interventions to divert young people from the Criminal Justice System
- Is confident representing UTurn at local events
You must be fluent in English, as required by Part 7 of the Immigration Act.
