About the role: This is a pivotal product role at Preply. You will own the AI Marketplace squad, with the mission of bringing machine learning intelligence across the entire marketplace. Our ambition is bold: within the next year, we want machine learning to power most of the marketplace experience. Preply sits at the intersection of some of the most interesting machine learning problems that involve linking learners to tutors across 90+ languages, with deeply personal context and signals spanning performance, behavior, personality, language, culture, and learning history. These are genuinely hard problems to solve. We’re looking for someone who has owned capabilities of similar complexity and breadth before, and who can build the center of excellence that helps crush them, set the bar for what great looks like, and elevate the rest of the organization.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Own the ML product portfolio: Define which ML capabilities get built, at what depth, and in what sequence. The ambition is for ML to power most of the marketplace experience. You will navigate trade‑offs, build a clear portfolio strategy, and influence across teams.
- Make ranking world‑class: Build a world‑class, intelligent, personalized ranking system that continually improves from our rich dataset.
- Own vision and business outcomes: You are accountable for team results, set direction, define success, and ensure work delivers results with a highly technical team.
- Make ML a trusted capability across Preply: Facilitate applying ML across the product organization, ensuring it creates value and setting up feedback loops to improve models.
- Bring the user into every strategic decision: Own learner and tutor needs, ensuring they shape the pipeline from top down.
- Partner deeply with Data and Engineering: Build strong partnerships, co‑shape vision, align on outcomes, and collaborate closely throughout execution.
What You Need to Succeed:
- Strategy and vision: Experience setting a clear multi‑quarter direction in a technical domain, navigating prioritization trade‑offs, and aligning stakeholders.
- Machine learning experience at large scale: Built ML‑powered products that drove meaningful user or business outcomes, especially in personalization, recommendations, retrieval, or ranking.
- Machine learning fluency and technical collaboration: Speak the language of technical teams, understand trade‑offs, push back when needed, prioritize effectively, and build trust.
- Learner and tutor empathy: Genuine curiosity about both sides of the marketplace and prioritization based on their needs.
- Data fluency: Work directly with data to identify patterns, uncover insights, and make informed decisions with analytics and technical teams.
- Organizational influence: Shape how organizations think about complex domains, align stakeholders, and build trust in ML capabilities.
- Executive communication: Translate complex, ambiguous work into clear points of view that drive leadership decisions.
- Experimentation rigor: Solid grounding in A/B testing, experiment design, and interpreting results with nuance.
Why You’ll Love It at Preply:
- A generous monthly allowance for lessons on Preply.com, a learning & development budget, and time off for self‑development.
- A competitive financial package with equity, leave allowance, and health insurance.
- Access to free mental health support platforms.
- Access to partner‑gifted wellness and gym centers through Gympass across London to promote well‑being.
- The opportunity to unlock the potential of learners and tutors through language learning and teaching in 175 countries (and counting!).
