Electrical Systems Engineer (Full-time)

Derby / Bristol / Solihull / Hybrid

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Electrical Systems Engineer to join our growing team, working on a technology development and demonstrator programme for a more‑electric power and propulsion platform in advance of a New Product Introduction programme. Projects include concept architecture studies, electrical system design, modelling, simulation, prototype development and full‑scale product demonstrators. We are considering power levels from a few kW up to several MW supported by voltage levels up to approximately 5 kV. This is an ideal opportunity to help develop cutting‑edge electrical technology for a wide range of aerospace applications.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse, develop, and demonstrate new electrical power system technologies for customers across all business sectors.
  • Contribute to the company’s electrical systems technology strategy and coordinate research activities through Electrical Technology Partners in the UK and globally.
  • Assist with the development of future supply chain for electrical commodities in collaboration with internal supply‑chain units.
  • Identify, develop, and implement innovative technology solutions in the areas of power generation and distribution.
  • Develop clear, comprehensive product specifications and performance requirements in conjunction with mechanical, electrical and systems teams, partners and suppliers.
  • Lead the definition of electrical projects, including capturing requirements, creating proposals, achieving stakeholder approval, acquiring funding and aligning partner support.
  • Resolve new and emerging technical, compliance and business problems using analytical processes and professional judgement.
  • Proactively access internal and external networks of specialists to further subject‑matter understanding and support the implementation of strategic collaborative relationships.
  • Provide technical direction to peers and junior professionals, and leadership to teams and projects within the specialism.
  • Support the definition of skill and professional knowledge within the area, identify, coordinate and deliver training and mentoring.
  • Ensure appropriate policies, standards and best practices are defined, shared and adopted.
  • Lead the sharing of best practice, represent the area as an authority in the defined subject, and provide concise justification for decisions, recording and capturing information in reports and systems.

Preferred Requirements

  • Professionally qualified Engineer (UK minimum BEng degree or national equivalent, higher degree preferred) with a background in aerospace electrical systems.
  • Experience in writing technical documents such as hardware requirements and specifications, product design specifications, test specifications, schematic, board‑level design details, etc.
  • Experience developing, implementing and validating electrical power systems and sub‑systems that integrate electrical machines, AC‑AC / AC‑DC and DC‑DC conversion stages that will connect to a grid and/or other loads via a distribution system.
  • Awareness of the analyses required to support electrical system architecture definition (e.g. Electrical Load Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis) and the impact of architecture choices on components, adjacent systems and the overall product.
  • Systems‑thinking mindset and understanding of systems engineering processes, tools and industry standards (ISO/IEC/IEEE15288, ARP4754, etc.) for development of complex aerospace systems.
  • Experience applying Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) preferred.
  • Awareness of safety and reliability methods applied to novel systems concepts (e.g. FHA, DFMEA, HAZOP analysis) preferred.

Benefits

  • Generous annual leave.
  • Retirement savings through the Rolls‑Royce Retirement Savings Trust.
  • Group life assurance providing a lump‑sum benefit if you die while employed.
  • Group income protection providing income in the event you cannot work due to illness or injury.
