At Rolls-Royce SMR, we are transforming the future of clean energy by delivering scalable, low-carbon nuclear power solutions that support global decarbonisation and energy security. Our mission is to deploy factory-built nuclear power plants that are affordable, sustainable, and commercially viable at scale.

The Team

You will join the Nuclear Equipment Component Design team, a multidisciplinary group responsible for some of the most critical components in the reactor core and fuel route. The team works across areas such as reactor pressure vessel internals, fuel assemblies, control rod systems, and spent fuel handling solutions, collaborating closely with supply chain partners and regulators to deliver designs through the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) and into deployment.

The Role

As a Component Design Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering integrated mechanical design solutions across the full product lifecycle, from concept through to operation. You will work within cross-functional teams and alongside global suppliers to develop robust, manufacturable designs that meet regulatory, safety, and commercial requirements while contributing to the maturity of the overall SMR product definition.

What We’ll Need You to Do:

  • Deliver mechanical component designs that meet performance, safety, cost, and schedule requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to ensure integrated, practical solutions.
  • Support product definition and design maturity across key programme stages.
  • Identify risks and resolve technical challenges with effective engineering judgement.
  • Contribute to verification, validation, and regulatory documentation.
  • Review supplier outputs and support delivery across the supply chain.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience; working towards Chartered status is beneficial.
  • Experience in mechanical design within a regulated or high-integrity industry.
  • Understanding product lifecycle activities from design through to in-service support.
  • Familiarity with engineering tools such as CAD and analysis methods (e.g. FEA).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Solid organisation and problem-solving capability in a complex environment.

Location

This role offers flexible and hybrid working, with time spent across our Warrington, Derby or Manchester offices. Occasional travel may be required to support delivery activities and supplier engagement.
