We are seeking an intern to patch and apply security-driven updates for our RHEL (Red Hat Linux) systems that support monthly data measurement, performance data warehousing, and automated report processing. The intern will perform operating system upgrades on virtual machines, update obsolete software components, and maintain Podman container images. When necessary, the intern will adapt Python, Perl, and PHP scripts to newer software releases and, if appropriate, migrate databases, processes, and jobs from outdated virtual machines to updated ones, ensuring continued workflow and data transfer.
Qualifications
- Computer Science or related discipline with a focus on computer system architecture and administration (preferred).
- Practical knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems and commands.
- Experience with scripting and data processing languages, primarily Python; Shell and Perl are also required, PHP is a plus.
- Knowledge of containerization technologies such as Docker or Podman (plus).
- Experience with MySQL or MariaDB administration (plus).
- Experience with Ansible Automation Platform (plus).
Project Description
- Review and inventory the processes, jobs, databases and Podman containers on RHEL Linux systems.
- Perform operating-system and software package upgrades on a need-basis, rolling back if issues occur.
- Test and understand constraints and differences in executing processes and jobs after upgrades.
- Adapt scripts written in Python, Perl, Shell, PHP and other languages to the new environments.
- Build, run, and manage Podman containers, ensuring correct execution.
- Verify that upgraded systems run correctly and integrate with other systems.
- Participate in rewriting a web-based data charting tool using Bokeh under senior guidance.
- Review resiliency and data-replication schemes for MariaDB databases under senior guidance.
- Test selected replication and recovery processes and begin implementation.
