Swift Temps are currently recruiting for an experienced Team Leader Mechanic to join a busy fleet management and vehicle maintenance operation in Edinburgh. The business manages and maintains vehicles on behalf of a wide range of companies, creating a varied fleet environment where you'll be dealing with different makes, models and types of vehicles.

This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced mechanic who is ready to take responsibility for a team while remaining actively involved in the workshop. You'll oversee the day-to-day maintenance operation, allocate work, support technicians with more complex issues and make sure vehicles are serviced, repaired and returned to the fleet safely and efficiently.

The Role

  • Leading and supporting a team of mechanics and workshop staff
  • Allocating daily jobs and ensuring work is prioritised effectively
  • Remaining hands-on with servicing, diagnostics, repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Diagnosing more complex mechanical faults and supporting the team with fault-finding
  • Ensuring servicing and repair work is completed to a high standard
  • Carrying out quality checks on completed work
  • Supporting technicians with technical advice and problem-solving
  • Monitoring vehicle maintenance requirements and helping to minimise downtime
  • Managing planned and reactive maintenance across a varied fleet
  • Ensuring vehicles are inspected, serviced and repaired in line with required standards
  • Using diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical and electrical faults
  • Ensuring accurate maintenance records and paperwork are completed
  • Liaising with fleet contacts regarding vehicle faults, repairs and priorities
  • Helping to manage parts requirements and ensuring the correct parts are available
  • Identifying any recurring mechanical issues and helping to put preventative measures in place
  • Supporting the training and development of less experienced members of the team
  • Ensuring workshop health & safety procedures are followed
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised workshop environment
  • Helping to improve processes and efficiency across the maintenance operation

About You

We're looking for an experienced mechanic who has the technical ability to lead from the front and the confidence to take responsibility for a busy workshop operation. You'll ideally have:

  • A Level 3 qualification in Vehicle Maintenance / Vehicle Mechanics or equivalent
  • Strong previous experience as a Vehicle Mechanic
  • Previous experience supervising, leading or mentoring a team
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle servicing, maintenance and mechanical repairs
  • Excellent diagnostic and fault-finding skills
  • Experience working across a range of vehicle makes and models
  • Good knowledge of modern vehicle systems and diagnostic equipment
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to prioritise workloads and manage competing demands
  • Good communication skills and the ability to build a strong team environment
  • A proactive approach and the confidence to make decisions when required
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems and electrical fault-finding would be advantageous, particularly given the range of vehicles within the fleet.

A Hands-On Leadership Role

This isn't a purely supervisory position. You'll still be turning your tools, diagnosing faults and getting involved in repairs, while also taking responsibility for the wider team and making sure the workshop operates effectively. With the company managing fleets for a number of different businesses, you'll have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of vehicles and technical issues, making this a role that offers plenty of variety rather than repetitive day-to-day work. For the right person, this is an excellent opportunity to step into a leadership position while remaining involved in the mechanical side of the job.
