Legislation Engineer

Swift is looking for aLegislation Engineer to join our Engineering team, reporting directly to the Engineering Director.

This is a specialist and influential position at the heart of our product development process. Working across ourtouring caravan, motorhome and holiday home ranges, you will be responsible for maintaining Swift’s technical compliance position and translating complex UK and European legislation into clear, practical engineering requirements.

You will work closely with our engineering and product development teams, approval authorities, technical services and external test facilities to ensure compliance is considered from the earliest stages of product development.

From securing whole vehicle type approvals and managing external testing to monitoring upcoming legislation and influencing future product design, this is an opportunity to take ownership of compliance across a diverse portfolio of products from one of the UK’s leading leisure vehicle manufacturers.

The Role

As our Legislation Engineer, you will:

• Prepare and manage GB and EU Whole Vehicle Type Approvals for our touring caravan and motorhome ranges, including information documents, approval portfolios, variants and extensions.
• Act as a key point of contact for approval authorities and technical services, including theVCA and SNCH.
• Ensure our holiday homes and lodges comply withBS 3632, EN 1647 and associated gas, electrical and fire performance requirements.
• Review compliance evidence at New Product Introduction (NPI) gate reviews and hold authority to approve or withhold compliance approval.
• Release Certificates of Conformity and statutory plates where the required compliance evidence has been achieved.
• Maintain a controlled register of applicable standards, clauses, approvals and test evidence across our product ranges.
• Support the Engineering Director in planning, budgeting and managing the annual external testing programme, including witness testing and the review and acceptance of test reports.
• Monitor emergingUK, EU and international legislation, assessing its technical and commercial impact and translating requirements into our NPI programmes at an early stage.
• Maintain competence as aBS 3632 NCC-approved inspector and energy assessor, including calculation of home energy efficiency data using the Elmhurst calculator.
• Represent Swift onNCC working groups and support company responses to consultations from organisations including DfT, DVSA and OPSS.
• Work with Supplier Quality to obtain and verify component-level approvals and declarations of conformity, including UNECE regulations, EMC, UKCA and CE marking, RoHS and REACH.
• Maintain conformity of production arrangements and support both internal and external audits.
• Assist with technical investigations and regulatory responses relating to field compliance issues, including safety defect and recall notifications where required.
• Provide accurate technical support to our Customer Experience team.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to interpret legislation and apply it in a practical engineering environment.

You will need:

• A degree inEngineering, Applied Science or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrable experience within a regulated product environment.
• Working knowledge ofEU and GB Whole Vehicle Type Approval, UNECE regulations, IVA and National Small Series routes.
• Practical experience preparing approval documentation and working directly with an approval authority or technical service.
• The ability to interpret technical standards and translate them into clear, unambiguous engineering and design requirements.
• Confidence working with test plans, technical reports and compliance evidence packs, with the judgement to identify where evidence does not sufficiently demonstrate compliance.
• Strong organisational skills and disciplined record keeping, ensuring a robust evidence trail is maintained for approvals.
• Excellent written English and the ability to produce clear and accurate technical documentation.
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to test facilities, suppliers and industry meetings when required.

It Would Be an Advantage If You Have

Experience or knowledge in any of the following would be beneficial:

• Leisure vehicles, automotive, trailers, bodybuilding or anotherlow-volume, high-variant manufacturing environment.
• Relevant British and European standards relating to caravans, motorhomes or holiday homes.
• Habitation gas systems, 12V and 230V electrical systems and fire performance requirements.
• PTC Windchill or another PLM system.
• Microsoft Dynamics 365 or a comparable ERP system.
• Industry technical committees or standards development through organisations such as NCC, BSI or CEN.
• Internal auditing or conformity of production.

The Challenge

Swift operates across three distinct product streams, each with its own regulatory requirements. Our product development programmes work to defined launch dates, meaning compliance evidence needs to be identified, planned and secured before products reach production.

You will be responsible for staying ahead of regulatory change, understanding how new requirements could affect our products and working with engineering teams early enough to influence design decisions.

With a broad model range and numerous product variants, this is a role requiring technical judgement, attention to detail and the confidence to take ownership of regulatory compliance.
