About the Role
We are hiring for the HGV Technician to join our busy Midlands depot. In this hands-on role, you will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, inspection, and repair of HGVs and mechanical road sweepers, ensuring vehicles remain safe, compliant, and operational at all times. Covering the Midlands region, you will work closely with the Workshop Manager and wider operational teams to diagnose faults, carry out preventative maintenance, prepare vehicles for MOT, and provide breakdown and call-out support when required. The role involves both workshop-based and mobile maintenance activities, ensuring vehicles across the fleet are maintained to the highest standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance, servicing, and safety inspections to HGVs, trailers and mechanical road sweepers.
- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance in line with manufacturer and company standards.
- Perform MOT preparation and pre-annual test inspections.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults.
- Identify root causes of vehicle defects efficiently and accurately.
- Carry out repairs on company assets as directed - (but not limited to) engines, gearboxes, clutches, braking systems, suspension steering and electrical systems.
- Repair/replace worn or defective parts and components.
- Ensure all work is completed to a high standard and within allocated timeframes.
- Accurately complete job cards, inspection sheets and maintenance records.
- Ensure all work complies with DVSA regulations and company policies.
- Follow health & safety procedures at all times.
- Ensure all repairs are completed correctly the first time.
- Carry out final checks and road test where required.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and attention to detail.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- Keep the workshop clean & organised.
- Report any defective equipment immediately.
- Liaise with the Workshop Managers regarding parts required and vehicle status.
- Work collaboratively with other technicians. Provide technical support or mentoring to apprentices where required.
- Attend roadside breakdowns as required.
- Diagnose and repair vehicles under time sensitive conditions.
- Ensure safe working practices in roadside environments.
- Support workshop housekeeping and maintain a clean, safe working environment.
- Ensure all work is carried out in line with company Health & Safety procedures.
- Monitor and resolve vehicle defects accurately and efficiently using company systems.
- Update the End of Day VOR report.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Workshop Manager or Senior Management Team.
Essential Skills
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Good understanding of HGV compliance and MOT standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work to deadlines without compromising safety or quality.
- Calm and professional under pressure.
- Computer literate with the ability to complete digital job records.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Class 2 HGV licence (minimum) and DCPC (desirable but preferred).
Desirable Skills
- Proven experience working on HGVs or in a similar transport/waste environment is a plus.
- Class 2 HGV licence and DCPC.
