Sweco is looking for a talented and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our design team in Leeds. This role can be worked flexibly with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times. Our water teams have global know-how of industry‑leading technologies and provide skills and inventive solutions across the full spectrum of lifecycle services in water engineering and broader water management. We support you to develop your technical expertise so you can become a real difference maker.

What does the role involve?

  • Leading the delivery of feasibility, optioneering, outline and detailed mechanical design packages for water and wastewater projects.
  • Producing and checking mechanical design deliverables including P&IDs, calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, procurement documentation and technical reports.
  • Taking responsibility for the technical quality and coordination of mechanical design outputs.
  • Acting as discipline lead on projects and coordinating activities with process, civil, and electrical teams.
  • Participating in design reviews, constructability reviews, hazard studies and ALMs.
  • Leading the identification, assessment and management of design risks and ensuring compliance with CDM requirements.
  • Providing technical support during procurement, construction, commissioning and handover phases.
  • Reviewing contractor and supplier submissions and responding to technical queries.
  • Developing effective relationships with clients, contractors, suppliers and key stakeholders.
  • Providing technical guidance, mentoring and development support to junior engineers.
  • Supporting business development activities, bid preparation and work‑winning initiatives.
  • Ensuring design outputs are delivered in accordance with agreed scope, programme, budget and quality requirements.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer status with the IMechE.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of mechanical design for the water industry.
  • The ability to work with engineers from all disciplines and other industry professionals to optimise and develop bespoke and innovative designs.
  • Experience in the delivery of water designs and specifications on water‑related projects for Water Companies, Contractors and industry.
  • An appreciation of the implications of works on the environment and knowledge of sustainable solutions, water and wastewater processes and health and safety legislation.
