Job Description
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Trainee Engineer to join our Traffic Solutions team and develop the skills required to maintain, repair and commission traffic signal systems and associated equipment across the Urban portfolio.
Working alongside experienced engineers, you will gain hands‑on experience supporting the installation, maintenance, fault‑finding and commissioning of traffic control equipment, helping to ensure that traffic signals and related roadside technology remain safe, reliable and operational for road users.
The role will involve working on a variety of traffic systems, including signal equipment, controllers, cabling and associated infrastructure.
You will receive training and support to develop your technical knowledge, build practical engineering skills and progress within the traffic engineering industry.
You will be responsible for carrying out planned and reactive maintenance activities, responding to faults, completing accurate work records and ensuring all works are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with customer requirements, contractual standards and company procedures.
The role is site‑based and will involve working outdoors in all weather conditions, working at heights, travelling to customer locations and participating in standby/call‑out arrangements when required.
Qualifications
Essential
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and Science.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to learn and develop technical engineering skills.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety and safe working practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable, organised and safety‑conscious approach to work.
Desirable
- Basic electrical knowledge.
- Electrical or electronic background.
- Qualification in Electrical or Electronic subjects.
- Previous experience within traffic signals, electrical engineering, highways or a similar technical environment.
- Experience using tools, test equipment or carrying out practical engineering activities.
- IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
