Your Challenge
We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our engineering team in Leicester. This role is heavily focused on New Product Development (NPD) and lifecycle support for SWARCO’s existing product portfolio, with a strong emphasis on traffic signal systems, signal controllers, and intelligent transport technologies. You will play a key role in developing, testing, and validating both hardware and software solutions, ensuring full compliance with relevant standards and delivering high‑quality, reliable products that support real‑world transport infrastructure.
Your Responsibilities
- Support New Product Development (NPD) across hardware and software‑based systems
- Provide lifecycle engineering support for traffic signal and controller products
- Ensure compliance with European Standards and TOPAS specifications
- Assist in developing solutions to meet new customer and system requirements
- Produce technical documentation and support full system validation and testing activities
Key Activities
- Plan and execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and equipment soak testing
- Record, analyse, and document all test results accurately
- Support resolution of issues during and after installation (mechanical, electronic, and software)
- Prepare and maintain project documentation in line with company processes
- Communicate design and testing strategies with internal teams and SWARCO partners
- Approve designs against technical requirements and applicable standards
- Develop and deliver training on SWARCO products and systems
- Maintain technical documentation and product/system approvals
- Produce detailed test plans and execute testing for customer approval, FAT, and soak testing
- Ensure all products meet customer, national, and regulatory standards
- Support product testing and certification activities
- Provide technical input into product/system requirements against customer proposals
Your Profile
Essential:
- Proven experience in traffic signals and/or traffic signal controllers (or closely related ITS/highways systems)
- Strong understanding of signal controller configurations, including special conditioning
- Technical qualification (GCSEs with strong technical capability, or A Levels / HNC in a relevant discipline)
- Understanding of industry specifications and standards
- Working knowledge of CE marking requirements
- Working knowledge of IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671 – 18th Edition)
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Understanding of production engineering processes (BOMs, engineering changes, MRP systems)
- Knowledge of UTMC and communications systems
- Ability to influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel (UK and occasional European travel)
- Awareness of safe working practices in operational and site environments
Desirable:
- Experience within Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) or highways engineering
- Exposure to product compliance, testing, or certification environments
- Experience working within structured product development or manufacturing environments
- Familiarity with engineering change processes and supplier collaboration
