This is a Fixed Term role for 2 years working 14 hours per week. Swansea University Medical School is a leading UK medical school, ranked 1st in the UK for research environment and 2nd overall for research quality, based on 2014 REF data. Neuroscience research at Swansea comprises senior investigators, researchers and lecturers, who work on understanding the biological basis of a range of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases.

You will provide laboratory and technical support to projects investigating the neurochemical and cell biological basis of multiple sclerosis – an inflammatory, demyelinating and neurodegenerative disease. You will work with colleagues in the Neuroinflammatory Research team (Howell group) at Swansea University Medical School. The group’s research focuses on identifying biomarkers for MS progression. You will handle clinical and post-mortem samples in projects using tissue staining, digital pathology and fluid biomarker analysis.

This 0.4 FTE (equivalent to 2 days per week) position would suit an enthusiastic and motivated graduate with aspirations to further their laboratory experience in neuroscience or biomedical research. Candidates should have A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and/or Maths (or equivalent experience). We would welcome applications from individuals holding a BSc or MSc in a Biosciences related subject who are keen to develop a career in biomedical/neuroscience research.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable evidence of taking pride in delivering professional services and solutions, as well as evidence of planning skills and an ability to conduct work in line with the objectives of the project. You will also need IT skills, including all Microsoft Office Packages, and excellent communication skills, both written and oral. You must be able to follow set procedures and protocols meticulously and have the ability to analyse and present data using appropriate software packages.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
