Overview
The role of this Research Assistant is to work on an Experimental Study and Computational Solids Mechanics model of soft materials with application to renewable energy and flexible materials for wave energy converters.
The successful candidate will work on the UKRI-funded Mor-Neidr project, focusing on developing experimentally-validated computational models for soft polymers including viscoelastic and viscoplastic models. This is an interdisciplinary project where computational coupled frameworks for Solids Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics will merge. The Research Assistant is expected to carry out independent research, develop new experimental set-ups to conduct experiments on viscoelastic polymers, and integrate the associated software for the Solids Mechanics side of the project under the guidance of the Principal Investigators (PIs) and other collaborators.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research on experimental studies and computational models for soft materials (viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior).
- Develop and adapt experimental setups to test viscoelastic polymers.
- Integrate software for the Solids Mechanics component of the project, in collaboration with project PIs and collaborators.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary work merging Solids Mechanics and Fluid Mechanics frameworks.
- Assist with the development of a test rig for a soft material component; mechanical design experience is an advantage.
- Collaborate with colleagues focusing on design and experimentation of soft energy harvesters.
- Engage with industry partners and participate in short-term knowledge exchange activities as opportunities arise.
