Purpose of the Post

To provide comprehensive information, advice and support on welfare benefits and tax credit concessions and other welfare services provided by voluntary and statutory bodies to carers and their families across the City & County of Swansea.

Main Areas of Responsibility

Advice and Information

· To provide advice and information to carers and their families on the services available to support them.

· To liaise with the Department of Work and Pensions, the Local Authority and other statutory bodies to establish benefit entitlement for carers.

· To assist carers and their families with the completion of forms and/or documentation in application for services or welfare benefits.

· Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of welfare benefits especially those

· related to disability and ill health

· Explain welfare benefit rules and who can claim, checking that clients are

claiming all the benefits they are entitled to and demonstrate an understanding of welfare benefits interact with each other

· Discuss options and courses of action with clients.

· Ensure all service users are treated with dignity, respect and empathy

· Offer wider income maximisation support including council tax reductions and any relevant grants that the carer may be eligible for.

· Keep up to date with relevant legal and policy changes and welfare reforms

· In agreement with the CEO undertake home visits within the City & County of Swansea as appropriate.

Administration

· To maintain clear, accurate and up-to-date case records.

· To provide relevant statistical information on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.

Awareness Raising

· To conduct other activities including talks and attending events to raise awareness of Swansea Carer Centre and the welfare benefits service and the needs of carers.

Monitoring & Good Practice

· To provide reports to aid the effective monitoring of the service.

· To maintain up to date knowledge of all legislation and law relating to social security and other related rights and statutory practice. This includes attending appropriate welfare rights training courses.

General

· To participate as a member of the staff team.

· To work at all times within the philosophy and policies of Swansea Carer Centre.

· To comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and with Swansea Carer Centre policy, paying particular attention to the reporting of dangerous situations.

· To respect the personal choice and lifestyles of colleagues, carers and people with care needs, ensuring that Equal Opportunity and Diversity principles are applied at all times.

· To ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.

· To comply with the Code of Conduct.

· To undertake any other duties that may be considered commensurate with the level of the post.
