Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Paediatrics in Swansea

The paediatric department is looking to recruit one Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow to join their department on a fixed-term basis for 12 months to commence in 2nd September 2026 - 31st August 2027 only. If candidates delay their start date for any reason, the post will still finish on 31st August 2027.

This post is being created to nurture our vision of improving our successful undergraduate medical education programme. This post will offer opportunities for candidates to gain practical experience in delivering teaching sessions and learn the latest evidence-based medical education practices. The Clinical Teaching Fellow post is based at Morriston Hospital.

Main duties of the job

• The candidate will benefit from access to resources and support from the medical school and will be encouraged to undertake a formal postgraduate qualification in medical education, for which courses are offered by Swansea University.
• Study leave will be readily granted for this activity.
• This post is suitable for doctors who wish to gain formal teaching experience in a department that works closely with Swansea University Medical School.
• The post is a full-time appointment, but applications from doctors wishing to work on a part‑time basis will also be welcomed.
• This is a fixed‑term post for 12 months.
• Travelling between Hospital/Clinic sites may be required to undertake duties.
• In exceptional circumstances, it may also be necessary to undertake duties at other locations with the Health Board.
• You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and, in exceptional, unforeseen circumstances, may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department.
• Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off‑day period or will be remunerated appropriately.

About us

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings. We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals. The Health Board is part of a Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University, aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Primary medical qualification - MBBS or equivalent
• MRCPCH
• Full GMC registration (obtained by designated start date)
• Knowledge of Child Safeguarding procedures and UK practices - level 3 or equivalent
• Higher degree - MSc, MPhil related discipline

Experience

• 3 years (minimum) experience of paediatrics
• Experience at registrar level or equivalent in paediatrics
• Experience of child safeguarding procedures
• Experience of teaching and presenting
• Understanding of principles of clinical governance
• Experience of audit activities and shows commitment to continuous improvement
• Clinical experience in related paediatric specialties
• Published research in peer reviewed journals

Aptitude and Abilities

• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
• Ability to work under pressure in a multi-disciplinary environment
• Ability to prioritise clinical needs
