The post is a one-year Training Interface Group (TIG) fellowship in hand surgery, commencing August 2026. The fellowship is intended to produce hand surgeons who are well versed in the breadth and depth of hand surgery. The fellow is expected to gain mutually complementary perspectives and skill from both Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery in the management of hand and wrist conditions.
Fellowships provide high quality, high prestige and quality assured advanced training in specified clinical areas of practice that are required by the service. This fellowship remains under the supervision and accreditation of the previous UK TIG training scheme in Hand Surgery. Applications are welcomed from both orthopaedic and plastic surgeons specialising in hand surgery. Exposure will be provided to the breadth of hand and wrist surgery, including elective and emergency hand & wrist surgery, arthroplasty, brachial plexus & peripheral nerve surgery, paediatric hand surgery, and spasticity surgery. There is a focus on the successful candidate to gain as wide an experience as possible, but flexibility is allowed as to the future specialism of the candidate.
Main duties: The post will build on the skills achieved by certification to enable a fellow to contribute unsupervised as a member of the multidisciplinary team to manage patients presenting with the full range of elective and emergency conditions related to the clinical area of practice of the fellowship. The post will not participate in the on-call rota and this post is not recognised for training.
Status: Registered within GMC at time of taking up post. Within 2 years of completion of specialty training.
Qualifications: Relevant postgraduate qualification in surgery as demonstrated for entry onto the Specialist Register. Enrolled in the Diploma of Hand Surgery.
Experience: At or above the level of a CCT. Evidence of continued experience commensurate with time since completion of specialty training. Clear career progression consistent with personal circumstances. To have current level of knowledge and skills significantly advanced by fellowship training.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check: This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Pay and Benefits: £47,946 to £74,328 a year per annum, pro rata if part time. The current pay scales may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales.
