The post holder will provide and maintain a flexible, dedicated, comprehensive support service to departments of the Health Board under the direction of the Portering Coordinator / Portering Shift Leader, enabling both clinical and non‑clinical departments to function effectively.

Main duties of the job:

  • Transfer patients, medical equipment, and associated sundries by bed, chair, trolley, etc.
  • Transfer furniture and assist in relocating equipment during office relocations or new developments, including disposal where appropriate.

Job responsibilities:

  • Maintain compliance with written procedures for all aspects of portering services and support service standards.
  • Participate in policy and service development, monitoring and improvement activities.
  • Use initiative to deal with routine enquiries and, under guidance, handle non‑routine enquiries.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, colleagues and other staff via telephone, radio, bleep and face‑to‑face.
  • Escort bereaved relatives to the mortuary as required.
  • Handle dirty linen/laundry and hospital refuse, including controlled waste, in accordance with procedures.
  • Transport controlled drugs, patient meal containers, internal mail and external mail to designated points.
  • Collect, distribute and document specimens/bloods for pathology, ensuring security at all times.
  • Provide the exchange, transfer of manifold and gas cylinders and document usage records.
  • Perform driving duties using vans/ambulances and undertake hospital mortuary duties, including access to the mortuary for the police, ambulance and undertakers.
  • Assist with search for missing patients and undertake patrol rounds, locking/unlocking doors and windows.
  • Respond to alarms and assist in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Participate in emergency procedures, including fire, major incident, air ambulance and medical emergencies, and comply with portering training.
  • Assist ambulance crews in loading and off‑loading patients.
  • Maintain, clean and inspect stretches, wheelchairs and other portering equipment.
  • Attend training required to meet statutory and service needs and provide guidance to newly appointed porters.
  • Travel patients, valuables and cash to the admin department.
  • Carry out duties required under the Data Protection Act 1998.

Person Specification:

Knowledge:
  • Good standard of general education covering a number of topics.
  • Understanding of customer services within the hospital environment.
  • Previous experience working in a portering role or a role involving working with members of the general public.
Qualifications:
  • Customer services training (NVQ Level 2) and knowledge of effective team working.
  • Previous experience within a hospital environment.
