We have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant post to join the Vascular Service within Swansea Bay University Health Board. The posts will form part of a team of 10 consultants responsible for the provision of the full complement of vascular surgical services to the South West Wales Regional Vascular Network.

Main duties of the job

The Vascular Network delivers outpatient and diagnostic services at seven sites across South West Wales and all emergency and major elective work is based in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. This post is on a 1:10 on‑call rota. The consultant will cover vascular surgical inpatient care in Morriston Hospital, being responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease and continuity of care for patients.

Job responsibilities

  • Provide clinical service as part of the vascular team, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of vascular conditions.
  • Maintain continuity of care for patients under your responsibility.
  • Perform surgical management of common vascular surgical conditions.
  • Provide surgical and endovascular procedures, including renal access surgery.
  • Act as first‑line on‑call surgeon for the network.
  • Participate in teaching and training of junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Registered with the GMC.
  • On Specialist Register with the GMC as a specialist in Vascular Surgery or eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview and have passed the exit exam or a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB, or hold a primary medical qualification and a recognised specialist qualification from a European Member State allowing direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Teaching qualification or higher qualification in medical education.

Experience

  • High level of clinical experience and competence in the management of the breadth of common vascular surgical conditions.
  • Indication of surgical experience in index vascular surgical procedures and operations.
  • Training and experience in endovascular procedures and techniques.
  • Experience in renal access surgery.

Skills

  • Sound wide‑based knowledge of vascular surgical conditions.
  • Ability to assess and offer expert opinion on clinical specialist problems in vascular surgery.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for vascular surgical patients.
  • Competence in surgical management of common vascular surgical conditions.
