Applicants are invited to join a team in the Department of Cellular Pathology at Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB), the biggest medical facility in Wales providing unique national subspecialist services in a range of disciplines, including centralised national pathology diagnostic facilities. The Directorate is composed of Departments of Cellular Pathology, Laboratory Medicine (Haematology and Chemical Pathology) and Immunology. Microbiology services, although an integral part of the Directorate, are provided and managed by Public Health Wales. The Directorate of Pathology is a Health Board wide service and part of the Morriston Service Delivery Unit.

The Department of Cellular Pathology incorporates Histopathology/Cytopathology laboratories at Morriston and Singleton Hospitals (both located in Swansea) serving primary and secondary care in Swansea, Bridgend and Neath, Port Talbot. In addition, it provides a regional diagnostic lymphoma service (part of the All-Wales Lymphoma Panel), South-Wales sarcoma diagnostic services and HER‑2 testing to the hospitals in South‑West Wales. The department is UKAS accredited under ISO 15189.

You must be fully registered with the GMC, be on the specialist register and have the Certificate of Completion of Training or be within 6 months of obtaining it by the date of the interview. Consultants in the SBUHB benefit from a flexible approach to working practices including homeworking.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining a team of 13 Consultants across SBUHB and undertake diagnostic surgical pathology and cytology, with autopsy being optional. Under the implementation of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), Swansea University, NHS and industry have established a unique platform for rapid translational research to improve health of the population and set a UK‑wide example for quality of care and medical research. In this context, development of a specialist interest, teaching and research will all be essential components of the successful applicant's job plans. Continuous Professional Development will be actively supported. You will be based in Swansea at one of the two Departmental sites, as per mutual agreement. You will be employed under the terms and conditions of the Welsh Consultants Contract. Other duties are described in the Job Description.

Qualifications

  • Full and specialist registration (and licence to practice) with the General Medical Council or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non‑UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCTFRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification.

  • Further relevant degree/diploma.
  • Teaching qualification/Higher qualification in medical education.

  • Evidence of teaching and training of post/undergraduate clinical staff.
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit.
