The Bowel Screening Practitioner will participate as a member of the nursing and multidisciplinary team providing high standards of evidence based care in the delivery of the Welsh bowel screening programme. They will be the first point of contact for participants who have received a positive faecal occult blood test and will provide specialist advice, support and continuity of care throughout the participant pathway. This will include making an assessment of fitness for colonoscopy, attending colonoscopy, managing the results handling process and referral to the multidisciplinary team if appropriate.

Main duties of the job

  • Ability to work autonomously providing nurse led telephone assessment clinics and face to face assessments in an outpatient setting.
  • Manage a caseload of participants and co-ordinate individualised participant care from assessment, through the screening colonoscopy journey, as well as the management of participants entered onto a surveillance programme.
  • Must have the ability to undertake participant consent from competent and informed participants; liaising with local mental health teams to ensure that participants who lack mental capacity are supported in the provision of a management plan.
  • Working collaboratively with other BSW Local Assessment Centres across Wales.
  • To use specialist knowledge and advanced communication skills with patients and carers when breaking bad news and providing psychological support on diagnosis, treatment and symptom management.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Develop close working links with other teams that may be involved in the care of the bowel screening participant, ie, histopathology, surgery, radiology, Colorectal Nurses, Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurses, Anti-Coagulation teams and Cardiac teams.
  • Provide and establish good positive working relationships with the Heads of Nursing, Sister / Charge Nurse and their teams, Education and Practice Development Lead, Matrons, relevant Clinicians, Service Managers and General Managers.
  • Actively promote the specialist service through dissemination of in-depth specialist knowledge, both locally and nationally, establishing robust networks.
  • Lead and participate in audit and research and benchmarking activities to ensure effective safe and evidence based practice.
  • The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome.
