Specialty Doctor in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

This is a specialty doctor post joining a clinical team of consultants in child and adolescent psychiatry and medical trainees, who collectively are responsible for the provision of psychiatric support as part of the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services within the Health Board. This is a permanent position due to commence as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary clinical team including medical colleagues, nurses, clinical psychologists, and psychotherapists in various therapeutic modalities, supported by an administration team. Swansea Bay CAMHS provides services across Part 1 and Part 2 of the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010. There is a Single Point of Access team providing referral triage and duty clinician support, and emergency work is supported by the CAMHS Crisis Liaison Team. The service works closely with other services and agencies, including education and social care. The service benefits from working alongside the First Episode Psychosis team in Adult Mental Health and the Neurodevelopmental Disorders Team in Child Health.

Main duties of the job:

• You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
• Working with your colleagues and the multi-professional team, you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care allowing for proper delegation to, and training of staff.
• In partnership with clinical and managerial colleagues, you will also have responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective functioning of the services in which you work in line with the values, operational policies and integrated medium-term plan (IMTP) of the Health Board.
• You may be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off-duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.

Qualifications:

• Essential: Full GMC Registration with a license to practice, MBBCh / MBBS or recognised equivalent.
• At least four years of full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty -or- as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty -or- shall have equivalent experience/competencies.
• Section 12(2) approval under MHA 1983 or willingness to undertake training/approval process.

Experience:

• Essential: Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team, commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working, liaison with other agencies, teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff, evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit.
• Desirable: Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems, experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Skills:

• Essential: Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance, ability to manage own time and workload, ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate, skilled in clinical audit, teaching and in basic IT skills, genuine commitment to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and flexible to meet the needs of the service, excellent interpersonal skills - ability to communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and staff, good verbal and written communication skills, clinical skills: assessment and management of patients with mental health problems, personal attributes: flexible and adaptable to competing demands, driving license/ability to travel between sites.
• Desirable: Welsh language skills.
