Assistant Community Psychologist – INTERNAL • Port Talbot

We are recruiting four fixed‑term Assistant Psychologist posts for 7 months ending 31 March 2027 within the Community Psychology Service, funded through the Trailblazer Project in Port Talbot. Four posts will be available: one supporting young people aged 16–25, and three supporting adults aged 25 and over.

These roles will work under the supervision of the Clinical Lead Psychologist to help develop, deliver and evaluate an innovative early intervention vocational recovery service. The service aims to support individuals in Port Talbot who wish to enter, return to, or engage in employment, training or volunteering, but are experiencing mental health difficulties that act as barriers. The post supporting 16–25‑year‑olds will work closely with a newly funded CYP Coordinator post within the Afan Cluster.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will develop and deliver low‑intensity, psycho‑educational group interventions and workshops to support adults and young people to move closer to employment, volunteering, training, or education, and to overcome mental health barriers. They will also provide low‑intensity one‑to‑one psychological work under supervision, developing individual formulations and delivering tailored interventions to address identified needs.

A significant aspect of the role will focus on service evaluation, measuring effectiveness through qualitative and quantitative outcome measures, patient feedback, and wider service data. The postholder will contribute to reporting findings and making recommendations to support the ongoing development, sustainability and enhancement of the service.

The role will involve collaboration with a range of professionals within the Trailblazer team and external partners such as Jobcentre Plus and local organisations offering employment, education and volunteering opportunities, supporting the development of effective pathways and networks to enhance vocational opportunities for residents of Port Talbot.

Qualifications and knowledge

• Minimum of a 2.1 Hons degree in psychology; eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.
• Further postgraduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health and/or research.

Experience

• Previous and relatable Assistant Psychology post experience or equivalent.
• Experience of MDT working.
• Experience of co‑facilitating psycho‑educative and/or therapeutic groups.

Skills

• High level interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills; ability to work in challenging settings.
• Ability to conduct literature searches and summarise findings.
• Ability to plan and prioritise own workload.
• Ability to speak Welsh.
• Creative thinking skills.
