A vacancy exists in the department for a Courier / Biomedical Sciences Support Worker to be based at our Laboratories at Morriston, Singleton and NPT Hospitals.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic and well motivated individuals for the post of Courier / Biomedical Sciences Support Worker.
The post holder will work as part of a team transporting Pathology samples and reagents throughout the Health Board on a tight schedule.
Good keyboard skills for data entry are required to carry out laboratory-based support tasks to include the preparation of patient samples prior to analysis and to input patient details into the Laboratory computer system.
Main duties of the job
The Laboratory Medicine Department has its Central Laboratory at Morriston Hospital with satellite laboratories at Singleton, Princess of Wales and Neath Port Talbot Hospitals. These are busy laboratories carrying out blood tests from patients from Hospitals, clinics and GP\’s in the Swansea, Bridgend and Neath districts.
As a courier you will be required to transport Pathology samples and reagents throughout this Health Board. You will be collecting samples from GP surgeries and delivering them to the relevant laboratory. Laboratory transport vans/cars are provided by the department for work purposes. As a courier you will be part of a team, covering different schedules on a rotational basis. You will often be carrying out laboratory based tasks.
We are looking for a well organised person with excellent communication skills. They must beable to work to tight schedules, be part of a team but also use their own initiative where needed .
When working in the laboratory, you will be required to carry out laboratory-based support tasks to include the preparation of patient samples prior to analysis and to input patient details into the Laboratory computer system. Good keyboard skills for data entry are required.
You will be part of a seven day week rota, including evenings.
A full valid driving licence for the UK is essential.

Qualifications And Knowledge
- GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power-point etc.).
- Science at GCSE or above.
- Understanding of Pathology service and laboratory experience.
- IBMS Certificate of Achievement Level 1 and/or 2
- Knowledge of hospital specialties
Experience
- Conscientious and dependable.
- Sense of responsibility.
- Previous experience of NHS or healthcare environment.
Other Essential Criteria
- Ability to travel within geographical area, to drive health board vehicle to deliver products and work hours flexibly to meet the needs of the service.
- Ability to stand for long periods and to perform frequent, repetitive movements.
