Clinical Specialist Paediatric Physiotherapist

The post holder will operate in a clinical specialist role within Physiotherapy, managing a defined caseload of clients with complex needs within this setting, using evidence-based/client-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions across the whole patient pathway e.g. acute, community.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing clinical leadership for junior and support staff through supervision and appraisal as delegated by the supervisor.
• Participating in the planning, development and evaluation of Physiotherapy Services within this designated area, holding responsibility for defined projects.
• Working flexibly to meet the needs of the service, including a 7-day shift pattern and travel between SBU Health Board sites as required to support service delivery.
• Contributing to the on-call rota and encouraging innovation and service development at all levels of the Physiotherapy Service.
• Regularly supervising Physiotherapy students on practice placements and other students e.g. Work Experience.
• Participating in CPD and developing skills and knowledge through participation in developmental activities.
• Leading the learning and development of the clinical staff within the area of expertise.
• Pursuing personal development in areas of clinical interest, service improvement and leadership and management.

Main duties of the job:

• Establishing rapport with the client before applying professional skills.
• Providing and receiving complex sensitive information in an understandable form to patients, carers, colleagues and students where motivational, persuasive, empathetic and reassurance skills are required.
• Establishing robust communication networks with clients, carers and other health and social care professionals involved in the client's care.
• Sharing acquired knowledge and skills with members of the physiotherapy service and multi-disciplinary team, peers, students and others as requested by your line manager using a variety of teaching methods and presentation skills.
• Effectively communicating information from senior leaders to the team as requested.
• Coordinating local team meetings and facilitating effective communication between all staff within your team.
• Working with clients/carers to negotiate and identify their Physiotherapy goals as part of their overall therapy plan.
• Planning and implementing individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the client, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.

Person Specification:

• Qualifications: Diploma/Degree in Physiotherapy, Professional registration with HCPC, Post registration training in relevant area, Recognised management/leadership qualification.
• Knowledge: MSc or its equivalent level of knowledge and advanced post-graduate training/experience in relevant areas, Knowledge of the workings of Paediatric Physiotherapy services, Involvement in audit, research and understanding quality issues.
• Experience: Substantial broad range and specialist Paediatric experience, Experience of specialist knowledge including Management of Common Paediatric disorders such as neuro-disability, learning disabilities and developmental delay, Substantial experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, Supervision experience of students, physiotherapy assistants and junior staff.
• Aptitude and Abilities: Highly developed interpersonal skills including developed oral and written communication skills with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, Able to work independently and as part of a team, Good problem-solving and analytical ability, Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate.
