Our client is an independent school specialising in providing a nurturing, alternative education for young people aged 11–19 who are disengaged from mainstream education, or who have additional needs such as autism, anxiety and ADHD. They are a small school with approximately 60 students and a friendly, family-based environment that supports vulnerable young people to achieve outstanding outcomes where previously little success was expected.

Working in groups of up to 10 young people, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of innovative Key Stage 3 and GCSE Science and/or English programmes of study. You will help ensure that students benefit fully from their learning and that steady and sustainable improvements are made in overall levels of retention and achievement.

You will be a strong communicator with confidence and authority, while also being able to build positive relationships and gain the respect of London’s urban youth. You do not need to be a qualified teacher, as training can be provided if required; however, you must have experience leading learning for young people from disaffected communities and/or those with special educational needs. You should be confident in lesson planning, classroom management, and using creative approaches to engage, motivate and inspire learners. Ideally, you will have taught Science and/or English up to GCSE level. You must be willing to undertake a DBS/police check.

  • Ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve their potential
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with the ability to meet deadlines
  • A creative, caring and compassionate approach and a strong team ethos
  • Knowledge of health and safety and safeguarding requirements, with a commitment to learner wellbeing
  • Available now or as soon as possible

What will your role look like?

  • Teaching students on Key Stage 3 and GCSE Science and/or English courses, including scheduled lessons, demonstrations, tutorials, supervised study and assessment
  • Supporting existing staff with curriculum development and new projects
  • Undertaking associated organisation and administration, including timetabling, course reviews, evaluations and classroom observations
  • Contributing fully to team meetings, staff development, planning, moderation and assessment activities
  • Maintaining high levels of student retention and achievement and supporting progression
  • Assisting with educational and community outreach activities
  • Supporting the school’s enrichment ethos and students across all courses

What can you expect in return?

  • Monthly pay into your bank/building society account on or around the 25th of each month
  • Auto-enrolment into the Workplace Pension scheme (if eligible)
