Sustii is recruiting a Sustainability Manager on behalf of a major London-based higher education institution, to drive sustainability performance across its property portfolio. This is a technical and strategic role that will work closely with and support our Capital Project Team in delivering our 2040 net zero carbon target across a large, complex, multi-site estate, including energy-intensive laboratory and research buildings.

What you'll be doing:

  • Translate high-level sustainability strategy into practical standards and targets for capital projects and refurbishments, acting as the go-to sustainability advisor for estates teams, project managers, consultants and senior stakeholders.
  • Work across multiple live projects to embed low-carbon design principles into new builds and refurbishments (fabric performance, building services, materials, whole-life carbon), and push hard on demand reduction, heat electrification and getting fossil fuel systems out of the estate for good.
  • Develop the climate adaptation and resilience agenda (overheating, flooding, water stress) working with engineering teams to build resilience into both capital projects and specialist lab spaces.
  • Ensure alignment with the wider Net Zero, Capital Projects and Maintenance Plans.
  • Focus on laboratories and specialist infrastructure: work with our Sustainable Labs Manager, academic departments and lab managers to make energy-intensive research spaces more efficient without compromising research performance, and develop a programme for low-energy labs and retro-commissioning.
  • Oversee carbon modelling, energy benchmarking and post-occupancy evaluation, support statutory reporting (SECR, ESG), and represent the organisation in sector forums and working groups.

What we're looking for:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in sustainability, engineering, architecture, building services or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in sustainability, energy or carbon management within the built environment.
  • A track record delivering sustainability initiatives on capital projects or estate-wide programmes within a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong technical grounding in low-carbon buildings, building services and energy systems, plus whole-life carbon assessment.
  • Confidence with data, carbon modelling, benchmarking, using analysis to challenge assumptions and drive improvement.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical detail for non-technical audiences.
  • A pragmatic, solutions-focused mindset, comfortable balancing ambition against operational reality.
  • Experience with laboratory or energy-intensive buildings, or within higher education/research/healthcare estates, is a strong advantage.

This is a genuinely impactful role for someone who wants to shape how a major institution decarbonises, with real influence over design, procurement and delivery at every stage of the property lifecycle.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and to building diverse, inclusive teams. We actively encourage applications from all suitably qualified candidates, regardless of age, disability, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, gender reassignment, sex, or sexual orientation.

Unfortunately we cannot offer Visa sponsorship for this position.
