They are seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join their dynamic team in Birmingham. This exciting opportunity offers a pivotal role in overseeing commercial operations on major rail schemes, working closely with our key client, and leading a team quantity surveyors.
The role would require a close relationship with the project director (operational lead) to act as the commercial lead of the project, to deliver the scheme, providing effective management of the client, the project team and the senior leadership team within the business.
This role would be to initially provide the support that the project needs, and beyond that there is an opportunity within the Rail business to assist the Operations Director and Senior Commercial Manager in the running of the Rail Depot Business, in a project capacity, or in a visiting manager capacity, which can be discussed further.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage a team of Quantity Surveyors ranging from Assistant Qs to Managing QS, ensuring commercial performance and project objectives are met.
• Develop and maintain a strong relationship, acting as the primary commercial interface to ensure alignment and successful project delivery.
• Conduct comprehensive reviews and management of the Contract (NEC4 Option C) ensuring compliance and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
• Oversee cost management, forecasting, and reporting to drive project profitability and efficiency.
• Provide strategic commercial guidance, supporting the delivery of the project in line with company standards and client expectations.
• Lead contract negotiations, variations/compensation events, and claims management to safeguard the company’s commercial interests.
• Ensure adherence to all relevant legal and regulatory requirements within the rail sector.
• Collaborate with internal teams, including the project director, project managers, planners, and engineers, to achieve project success.
Requirements:
• Proven experience as a Commercial Manager within the rail or infrastructure sectors.
• Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with NEC3 & NEC4 contracts.
• Excellent leadership skills with a track record of managing commercial teams effectively.
• Exceptional stakeholder management abilities, particularly with clients.
• In-depth understanding of cost control, contract law, and risk management within major infrastructure projects.
• Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
• Relevant qualifications in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or a related field.
